Hi I’ve upgraded my pc and now have a 27 inch iMac 2020 3.8GhZ 8 core intel i7 with 64 Gb of ram yet the loading time of the Legacy of Rock is still really slow? Any suggestions of how this can be speeded up?
Cheers
BTW: Kits are absolutely stunning!!

Hi,
since the kits are loaded into RAM from your hard drive, what makes a really significant change is if you put your libraries on an SSD.
I have most of my libraries on an NVMe SSD and the Default Legacy Of Rock preset (3579MB) takes about 10 seconds to load on my MBP 2019 2,4 GHz 8-Core Intel Core i9 w 32GB RAM.

Hey corollary to John’s post is that if your library is on your main hard drive, that is not a great as it is a high traffic drive, is will adversely affect audio production. Keeping your audio production and sample libraries separate from your system drive will ensure fewer (if any) CoreAudio overloads as well as faster loading times for your SDX libraries.
FWIW, Legacy of Rock loads from my mech RAID drive is only a few seconds longer than John.

All libraries now on SSD, Legacy of Rock, Rock Foundry kits still taking 1min 30 secs and upwards to load??
My iMac has 64gb ram, so not sure why loading times are so slow? Any suggestions welcome!!
Cheers

Even a fast SSD connected through the wrong interface will be slow, so you might need to tweak your setup. You could measure the read performance of your various drives with a free app (like AmorphousDiskMark – never used it but is free and has good reviews). Then you could compare with expected performance for the drive, others’ posted performances, etc.
If the SSD speed check is OK, then it is not drive performance causing your issue.
FYI – I just ran the above mentioned speed test and my SD3 library SSD read speeds were reported as 696, 613, 168 and 30 (all MB/s, tests: SEQ1M QD8 & 1 and RND4k QD 64 & 1).
Using this SSD the amber kit (10227 MB with my config) loads in 25 seconds. If I do the math that is about 400 MB/s, so not too far off of the sequential read results quoted.

Thanked by: DavidYeh its kind of strange? I’ll give you an example of what the issue is…..
When I log on to my PC and boot up SD3 then select Legacy of Rock Amber default kit it takes an age to load. Then if I select another kit for example Sparkle Ambient kit, that too will take an age to load. But, if I go back and re – load the Amber default kit, it takes literally a couple of seconds?
Don’t quite understand what is going on?
Will try and take a look at the SSD speeds in the meantime.
Cheers

Just a shot in the dark here. Are you running any sort of virus protection? If yes, can you disable it and see if that changes anything.
Mac Studio M1 Max, RAM 64 GB, 1TB Drive, OSX 12.x/13.x and Windows 10 (VM)

Thanked by: DavidNo my friend, no virus protection running.
Thanks
Like I said… shot in the dark. Is this running standalone or within a DAW?
After rebooting your Mac, startup the activity Monitor, then SD3 and then load one of the kits that are slow. Check the activity monitor and see if anything unusual is taking CPU cycles.
Speaking of CPU cycles, in SD3 standalone > Settings >Performance tab, how many cores do you have configured?

Hey Brad,
Thanks for the suggestions!! Its doing the same in standalone and in Logic X. I haven’t touched the cores they are set as standard at 2.
I’ll have a look and post again.
Thanks again

Just as an experiment, could you try setting the core while in standalone to 1 and see if that makes any difference?
All in the name of science of course 🙂

Still no joy.
Like I said earlier on in the thread, its only when I do the initial loading of the kits that it takes a long time to load?
For example, if I load up the amber default kit from scratch, it’ll take an age, then if I change to another kit, lets say the silver dry kit, that too will take an age to load. But lets say that I want to go back and load the amber ambient kit (after the silver ambient dry kit has finished loading), it’ll take a couple of seconds to load?
Kind of annoying really because my iMac is pretty much brand new and super fast.
Any thoughts?
cheers

Have you measured your library storage hard drive read speed? My calculations showed the kit loading time were just about what the speed measurements predicted. If you are not seeing that the loading times match what speeds would suggest, then something else is going on.
The speedy reload could come from caching, so might not be reflective of the nature of your fresh loading delays.
