You can move the SDX files as well as the Core library to an external drive. Just point SD3 to the new location.

I don’t quite understand your problem if they are already on an external drive. Needs a better explanation from you. I do know that you can have alternate locations for the content files which you set from within SD3. Do note that you can move things while the program is running. You have to move the files and then restart SD3 and point it to the new location. The program file itself MUST reside in the Applications folder on your system drive.

    Hello again!

    Thanks again for replying.

Im very much aware of all of that. I’ve redirected them via Preferences in the Toontrack menu. Everything works just fine…besides that my system data files becomes huge when installing SD3 and Keyscape….which also is directed to an external ssd….

I still don’t understand what your problem is. Your system files and applications MUST reside on your internal system drive. They can’t be split into 2 locations/drives. The Spectrasonics sample files stuff can also reside on an external drive. So what is the issue then?

My problem is, as I mentioned, that my storage goes bananas regarding System files, when I download SD3 and Keyscape even though I have directed them to my extern hard-drives. We’re talking 3-400 GB of system files…Which is a BIG problem since my hard drive is 512 GB. My system-files are on my internal drive. (It’s not that hard to handle the installation-process since the program asks where you would like to install your content.)

So are you talking about downloading the installers to your system drive from Toontrack Product Manager? If yes then you can change the preferences of the Toontrack Product Manager to download to your external drive as well.

Hope I am understanding the issue you are having.

Well, I’m running a MacBook Pro M2 2023 on Ventura and had exactly the same issue on my M1 2020 with Monterey, so I think this problem started with Monterey and have excelled with Ventura. Im not doing anything unusual…Im just installing the Toontrack downloader and then manage all the downloading and installing-processes from there….like you’re supposed to. When asked where to download I choose my external drives and in case I missed something I redirect it via “Preferences”. So the only thing that is strange is that it seems like the Mac needs to “make room” on the internal drive for the files even though the files are on an external drive…or something. I don’t know. That’s why I reached out to Apple support and they didn’t really know so they redirected me to this forum. Im not saying that I know that this is a Toontrack-problem.. it might as well be Apple…or perhaps booth. But I think they need to talk to each other….Or help me to get this right….since it’s impossible to erase system data except “Time Machine-stuff” and some other things, but I don’t even have Time Machine so….The only thing that makes a small change on the huge system file is when I erase all of Logics sound library.

If you’re doing things properly there’s no system file or files for SD3 or Keyscape that are in the 300 to 400 GB size range. The file size for SD3 samples is roughly 144gig if you don’t install the surround files. And there’s no need to have them. Just select in the installer where to put the samples and it will put them there. The program file size for SD3 is just over 12 MB. And the program file size for an older version of Omnisphere is less than 121 MB for the au format. Certainly none of those file sizes are in the range you’re talking about.

Yes some programs have a need for more than the final size to do the install but nowheres near the range you are seeing.

You may not have Time Machine actuated but you do have it as it’s part of the Mac operating system. And there are other ways of getting rid of system data than by TM. You just need to know what you’re doing and that I think is the crux of the issue here. You either don’t really know what you’re doing or you’re over-thinking things. It has nothing to do with whatever MacOS you’re running as long as the programs you’re installing are compatible with that particular operating system.

Ehh,…In exactly what way do you mean I don’t know what Im doing? Besides all the ways Ive tried to get rid of system data (I also have Google, you know) Can you please tell me one….just one…that actually works, since you seem to know it all. Didn’t you see the screenshot? almost 400GB of System File data. Is that normal, you think? Is that overthinking. Instead of being an asshole, why don’t you try to really help me instead…or maybe you can’t handle that you don’t kn0w either? There is nothing of what you have proposed that I haven’t tried at least four times already. This started with my last M1, mind you. I ve spend an endless amount of hours cleaning out my Macs from scratch, formatting and reinstalling the whole operating system, so why don’t you tune down your tone a little bit, will you.

I just said there’s no such thing as the amount of system data that you are seeing if you properly set the downloader/installer. That’s what I meant by ‘you don’t know what you are doing’. I’ve been doing this a LOT longer than you have. So yeah I know what I’m talking about. The installer is pretty foolproof elsewise more people would be having the same issue you are having.

Aha, so in what way exactly should I set up the installer? And how do you know that you’ve been doing “this” (exactly what?) a LOT longer than me? I was born 1968 and have been working professionally as a musician in Sweden since I was 18 years old. Started creating and mixing in the box when Atari launched their first sequencer. is that long enough or are you going to keep on with this insulting-game? I thought this was a forum for grown-ups…By the way, do you work at Toontrack? If not….thank you for trying to “help”, but no thanks.

Hi there could you go into finder, make sure you have Macintosh HD selected, set up a find for files greater that 1.5GB and see what is returned?

    Hello Brad!
Thanks a lot for reaching out!
I actually found some files there, which shouldn’t be there. That was a great tip…Still stuck though with crazy amount of “System Data”.
