I’m trying to position the cymbals around the shells, but I’m having trouble positioning them properly. I’m working with the SD3 default instruments, at the moment (I dont have much more than this) and I’m building a Zildjan set (as far as possible, I’ve added an Istanbul ride and china), but they dont appear to be in the same position as I see them on the monitor. I see cymbals 1 (left), 2 (left/mid), 3 (mid), 4 (right/mid) and 5 (right) nicely spread out around the shell kit, but the positions I hear are: left, left, left/mid, right/mid and left…
How do I create a balanced panorama with cymbals, around the shell kit?

that’s a good question and i will be watching for the reply from toontrack.
Yes, mine do not play in the order shown either when I strike the pad.
I am using a Roland TD-17 and there is no preset for that,
but read that I should select a TD-25 , so could that be why?
Also awaiting an answer.
You can map any of your physical cymbals to the ones in SD3. I have 5 and put them in the exact order they are around the kit in SD3. You will probably have to use the learn function to get them right. I actually recorded the midi output of every pad and cymbal on my td30 and then wrote the note numbers down and changed them all manually on SD3.
SD3 with older sdx,s plus Rooms of Hansa and Death & Darkness. Cubase and wavelab current versions. Roland TD50x using all trigger inputs for triggering SD3 only. Windows 11 computer. Various keyboards and outboard gear as well as VST instruments. Acoustic drums: Yamaha 9000 natural wood and Pearl masters. Various snare drums. RME BabyFace Pro FS and Adam A7X monitors
tim, I’m using a CY-15R in the aux with no problem, so you might want to give the TD-25 setting a try.
Is it perfect? No.
I’m using TD-25 because a moderator suggested that to someone’s question about adding a TD-17 setting.
I do wish there was a TD-17 preset, but there are so many brands/models out there, I can understand
Toontrack’s reluctance.
I think we’re loosing the essence of the question. It’s about from which direction the sounds of the cymbals come from. Overheads and Room mics are stereo and as such are directional and when I position, say the china, on the right side of the kit (like the kit is set up in the picture), the directionality coming from the speakers positions the china on the left side of the kit.
In the end all the cymbals in the default assortment are positioned from left to mid and there are no cymbals that sound from the right, leaving the cymbals sound ‘left-heavy’ and leaving a gap on the right.
The question is how to make, lets stick to the example, the china sound like its coming from the right side of the kit, where it is visually positioned?
Cheers!
