How do I make hi-hat open/close sizzle in grid editor?

Is there an articulation for this? Stick strikes slightly open hat, foot closes the hat as a rhythmic accent…

Or this this a matter of futzing with the various hat open/hat closed articulations in the grid editor until you get what you want? If this is the case, I guess the best thing would be to create a couple and save as a user MIDI file?

Hey, thanks. Not sure how to “draw the articulation in on the CC4,” (do you mean add the MIDI notes to the Grid Editor for the articulations you mention)?

CC4 values give smooth transitions with the hi-hat foot pedal for varying degrees of the hi-hats openness.  So I did a quick drawing on what it would be like, you’ll have to play around with it for your time signature/bpm but this is what I think you are looking for.  Basically start with the hit of the most open you want, then the higher the dots go in the CC4 lane, the more closed the hi-hat gets eventually ending with a closed hi-hat pedal.

PS:  I am at work right now, so I remoted into my machine and I have no way to preview this audio, so this could be completely wrong.  LOL.

If you’re looking for the hi-hat “bark” type of sound, I just do it with one of the Open articulations (either 2 or 3) immediately followed by either a Pedal Close or Tight Tip, depending on how I want to accent the close. The only times I bring in the CC is if I’m closing the hi-hat slow enough that the transitions would be more pronounced.
