Hi-hat controller problems with edrum set MPS-850

Hi,

I just downloaded the demo version of EZdrummer to see if it works in conjunction with my new Millenium MPS-850 edrum set. Overall, I am pretty impressed how well your software complements the drum set, but I have one big problem with the hi-hat control.

In my case EZDrummer does not recognize the opening of the hi-hat. If I close it by foot EZDrummer makes the corresponding sound but from then on the hi-hat stays closed forever. Of course, I extensively tried out different settings, especially “MIDI Mapping” and “Pedal Correction”, unfortunately without success (none of the MIDI mappings or pedal control curves helped). I had a look at the MIDI data the drum module sends to the computer with MIDI-OX (see below). I found that a Note On and Note Off is only sent when the hi-hat is closed, not when it is opened. However, the CC4-data (“foot controller”) is sent correctly. When using the internal sound engine of the MPS 850 module the hi-hat works as it should (opening and closing), thus the hi-hit controller obviously works as intended.

I could imagine that the MPS 850 drum module just has a strange or unusual way to put out the hi-hat controller data. As far as I can see there is no way to cahnge this on the side of my drum module. Is there any way of making EZDrummer interpret the MIDI data from my drum set correctly? It could of course also be that I am just make a stupid mistake …

It would be sad if EZDrummer is not useable with the MPS850 kit because apart from this hi-hat issue it works very well and I like it very much.

Hi,

just a supplement to my posting above. I just realized that the above described problem only occurs when using EZdrummer in Propellerheads Reason 10 as a VST instrument. When using the EZdrummer stand-alone application the hi-hat works more or less okay, at least opening and closing is recognized as intended. I haven’t tried other VST hosts yet. I will try to figure our if the problem is on the side of Reason or the EZdrummer VST plug-in.

Did you find any solution to this problem? I’m experiencing the same thing with the full version of EZDrummer 2, when using it as a VST Instrument in Reason 10…

Hi,

the problem is clearly on the side of Reason. After some experiments it became clear that Reason’s sequencer does not support MIDI CC4 messages. They can neither be recorded nor played back inside of Reason and they are not even passed to VST  plug ins when they arrive via MIDI-in. Since EZDrummer unalterable uses CC4 for the hihat it is simply not usable in Reason. I contacted the Propellerheads support with this issue and they confirmed that CC4 is not supported in Reason, and according to the suppoert guy there are no plans to change anything about this.

So the short answer is: EZDrummer2 (and all other plug ins that use MIDI CC) does not work properly with Reason (and this is Reason’s fault).

I will probably switch to another DAW in the near future.

If you have the same problem it might help to also contact Propellerheads with this issue just to make clear that there is at least some demand for this functionality.

I am as well the happy owner of the MPS 850 but had even more issues than you! I am therefore seeking for your help 🙂

In my case, my Millenium MPS-850 edrum set doesn’t work in conjunction with EZ Drummer 2 (both in DAW or in standalone). I used the Roland UM ONE mk2 MIDI cable between the e-drum and my MacBook Pro (MID IN & OUT in the module through USB into the Macn see picture).

The cable is recognised in EZ but nothing happens when hitting the drums pad….I tried different MIDI chanel but it still doesn’t work… I am deseperate to fix it out!!!

Can you please let me know which cable are you using to trigger your edrum on EZ? Any idea or tips to help me will be highly appreciated. Hope to hear back from you. have a great WE!

It sounds like a midi mapping issue. You either change the output from the drum module using its midi mapping and select the cc that you need, or you can map in your host AU drum kit.

Another guy solved his STRIKE hi-hat issues. He took the black cap on top of the spring off, flipped it over, and put it back on. This way it adds length to the spring essentially. Then, he was careful to NOT LET THE WEIGHT OF THE CYMBAL PUSH THE SPRING DOWN AT ALL. Just slide the top cymbal down until it touches the top, then tighten it there.

I tried this, and I’ve found it is indeed better, and I can finally get the “in-between” sounds between open and closed, both edge and bow. I’ve never had them before.

Millenium mps 850

I have the Millenium mps 850.

when i play the metal kit (017) I automatically get the bright 084 soundtrack along when i play the basedrum. I don’t know how to disable this. Doen antone know how ?
