I have a TD-12 Roland brain and a VH-11 hi-hat. Even when setting MIDI to the Roland preset the hi-hat is always “open.” The TD-12 hi-hat footpedal sends a CC16 MIDI message to SD3, as seen in the MIDI monitor. I can see in the preferences that the SD3 Hi-Hat is looking for a CC4 value. I assume that this is the problem?
Is there a way to change the SD3 hi-hat CC to CC16 instead of CC4 (the learn function is grayed out when editing the hi-hat CC properties)? (There doesn’t seem to be a way to edit the CC output in the TD-12 itself)
The Yamaha SDX900 also puts out CC#4.
I am also have an issue with the mapping, and it is no where near as easy as SD2.
The Yamaha eDrum preset comes close, but I’m wondering if they used a modified SDX brain, where the OEM MIDI default had been altered.
Currently, I am using Cakewalk’s Sonar to record the Yamaha’s MIDI output, and CC, and it’s proving to be a challenge to get SD3 mapped and the two to work naturally…
The Yamaha brain’s hi-hat is flawless and sounds real – SD3 not so much.

See if this video helps. It worked for me.
Thanks yeah Toon track told me to watch I think the same video! and it worked, I just needed to change CC16 to CC4 but the roland brain didn’t use the term “CC” so I was confused at first
Nice vid.
The Yamaha DTX900 does not have a hi-hat pedal readout, but I get the jist.
(I used Sonar Platinum to record the MIDI from the hi-hat, and CC#4 shows as traveling from 0 to 127.)
I’ve gone over the DTX900 manual, changed every possible hi-hat parameter, and I still get an open top hi-hat cymbal way too soon from SD3.
…regardless of where the Hi-Hat Pedal Control points are placed.
The hi-hat MIDI notes from the DTX900 are:
> Closed Pedal (Foot) 44 (Yamaha) – mapped to 10 (SD3)
> Splash 83 – mapped to 10
> Edge Closed 79 – mapped to 62
> Bow Closed 42 – mapped to 63
> Edge Open 78 – mapped to 7
> Bow Open 46 – mapped to 8
All MIDI notes from the Yamaha DTX900 are factory set – none have been altered.
The Hi-Hat Pedal uses/outputs CC #4 – yet #4 is listed as “No” in the edited column of the MIDI Mapping Overview.
The Yamaha DTX900 does not use nor output CC#1, yet in the MIDI Mapping Overview, CC#1 shows “Yes” in the Edited column.
Why does CC#1 show as being edited if it is not used??
That implies the points being adjusted in the Hi-Hat Pedal Control are being adjusted for CC#1 – not CC#4…
Regardless of where the Hi-Hat Pedal Control points are placed, SD3 sounds an open top cymbal out of place.
If I play the DTX900 in “local” mode, using the DTX900 module internal sounds, the hi-hat sounds nearly perfect.
With “local” mode turned off, per the video, SD3’s hi-hat does not feel nor sound fluid.
It felt and sounded much better in SD2.
Anyone have any success with their Yamaha DTX 900 hi-hat and SD3?
Anyone from Toontrack care to assist?
Thanks,
MG
I’m struggling with the same issue, but the video above does not help b/c I just got the Alesis Nitro kit and I can’t find which # its pedal/foot CC control is using. I’ve searched everywhere online, the Nitro manual, the Nitro e-kit screen itself, and am currently on hold with Alesis on the phone.
Alesis’s current pedal/foot CC control can’t be CC4 because the struggle I’m having is that the SD3 Hi-hat and Snare calibrations are not working.
So I’m wondering, is there some way in SD3’s settings to change the “assigned Hi-Hat Pedal CC Control” to be a different number other than 4?
I’ve attached a picture and I’ve tried this approach so far: In SD3’s MIDI In/E-drum settings > choose Alesis Nitro as the preset > on the Mapping tab, over on the left in the dropdown “Show = Hi-Hat Pedal CC” > over on the right (still in the Mapping tab), change the blue number (e.g., 44) to be all sorts of different numbers (so far I’ve tried numbers 1-48) > click Learn > push the pedal up & down > this populates the “CC44 | Hi-Hat Pedal CC Control | Map” row that’s currently highlighted in blue > then I go over to the Hi-Hat Pedal tab and try to calibrate with that CC44 row highlighted > but the pedal openness bar still does not go up or down, so it’s not registering.
Other info, Alesis Nitro’s “MIDI Note Number” triggers are: Hi-Hat Open (46), Hi-Hat Half-Open (23), Hi-Hat Closed (42), Hi-Hat Pedal (44), Hi-Hat Splash (21)
