Try whether this sample auditioning option might be what you’re seeking:

    https://www.toontrack.com/manual/ezdrummer-3/3/3-2-the-instrument-properties

    oops! sorry. that’s EZD3 function

That is just a half assed emergency solution and will affect all grooves !

The option to set audition velocity level 0-127 in the settings should have been implemented way back in 2017 when SD3 was released.

Those lazy ass developers should get to work ASAP and fix things on the extremely long bug list and things like this.

Never noticed this. Seems fine to me.

SD3 with older sdx,s plus Rooms of Hansa and Death & Darkness. Cubase and wavelab current versions. Roland TD50x using all trigger inputs for triggering SD3 only. Windows 11 computer. Various keyboards and outboard gear as well as VST instruments. Acoustic drums: Yamaha 9000 natural wood and Pearl masters. Various snare drums. RME BabyFace Pro FS and Adam A7X monitors

Yeah it is a bit louder than regular playing but not that bad UNLESS you’re working at obscenely high volume levels. Even with headphones it’s not that bad. It’s not enough to cause hearing damage if you work at sane levels. The only time I crank the audio levels is when I’m doing a final mix otherwise I’m working at much lower levels. Too loud can fool one into thinking things are great and they probably aren’t. If you think you need to work at high volume levels then you’re hearing is already damaged. Or you don’t know how to properly record.

If I am working with a simple Reggae groove where you don’t need blasting full on hits but instead moderately hits ( like sidestick on the snare) I usually have to increase the input gain around 18-24 decibel in Studio One to be able to get SD3 leveled with the other instruments like bass, guitar and keyboards.

It’s like the drummer is more gentle to fit the music but if I then happen to click any of the drums with the mouse I get blasted by that instrument at full 127 velocity level

Of course if you’re into metal, things like this wont happen because then it’s pretty much at the max all the time so you wont hear the difference when you click with the mouse to audition the drums.

I know you don’t want to hear this but I’m going to suggest that you’re working wrong. You don’t need to have things at final level when crafting the groove. I used to work with everything at final when recording but learned I have a better end result when working at lower levels and then when mixing and mastering bring the levels up to snuff. I think you’ll find a lot of engineers work that way.

BTW snare sidestick is never really that hot to begin with. A real drummer would know that.

    That’s exactly my point !

I am working at relatively low to medium levels but it is the audition velocity @ 127 that is the main problem here !

It’s pure stupidity to set the audition velocity level at the maximum 127 and plain laziness to neglect to implement a setting for audition velocity level 0-127 on the settings page. Every time you select an instrument you hear it @ 127 velocity. I doubt that the developers are part time drummers or even musicians.

The case with the sidestick is that in order to actually hear it at all in the mix among other Instruments , the only way is to increase the gain in the Studio One mixer.

SD3 have some really cool, great and unique features but some departments like GUI, audition velocity levels and certain time line features seems to have been left to some trainee.

The name Superior Drummer seems more comical than what it was supposed to be at this point after nearly 5 years.
There are tons of suggestions and bugs Toontrack just don’t seem to care about at all.

Anyway the future of drum plugins is not hundreds of GB of samples but rather modeling like what the company called Audio Modeling is doing right now with horn and string instruments.

It’s not a question if, but rather when, we see a professional drum modeling software.

MODO Drums is not yet on par with Toontrack but times are a changing.

    Toontrack take notes 😉

I usually want to hear what the sound is at 127. Especially snares and bass drum although I see no reason why a setting couldn’t be provided to change this value. I haven’t heard anything that does modelling come anywhere close. The toontrack articulations are far superior to anyone else’s. Modo drums are terrible imo. Roland whose flagship kit is modelling is also very poor. I’m not a toontrack fan boy but I do think they are streets ahead of any other drum vsti.

Totally agree but SD3 could be even better if the devs would actually listen to users and implement things they want and that make sense !

The difference between good and really great !
If there is a purpose for making an option that helps users in any way I’m all in. If you don’t need or want it you can always deactivate the option.

The Audition Velocity Setting 0-127 option is such a no brainer and should have been implemented at the release of the software.

I mean the software is nearly 5 years ( FIVE YEARS )

I used to be sort of a fan boy but I am not as convinced any longer since it been so long without any real response.
