Having SD3 set to “eight” cores makes reason 10 “computer too slow”

    Hi,

I think you need to elaborate, which kind of computer are we talking about?
How many cores do you have in total? Which OS?
Have you read the Manual regarding setting the cores?

CPU Usage: This drop down menu allows you to delineate a number of CPU cores for Superior Drummer 3. Using more cores will increase Superior Drummer 3’s performance to an extent. If you run a single instance of SD3 in its standalone application you can set the number of Cores to any number of cores that your computer has available. In this case you set the value and you experience the performance result.

If you run SD3 in a host DAW (and other plug-ins are also used) it’s possible that your DAW will be multi-core aware too and run the plugins in parallel (one core each). If all those plugins use multiple cores themselves you may end up with considerably reduced CPU performance.

For Superior Drummer 3 using 2 cores generates nearly a 2X speed improvement, however the returns are diminishing (e.g. using 4 cores will not create a 4X boost). For these reasons this setting (when SD3 is used as a plugin) requires some experimentation as each user will need to decide for themselves which setting delivers the best performance.

In general CPU cores only need to be increased if you experience glitches because the CPU can not keep up. These can often times manifest themselves as audible clicks, pops and distortions. It is common to experience these types of glitches with very low buffer settings and in this instance it would be a good idea to raise the amount of CPU cores dedicated to SD3.

Sorry for reviving this. However, I’m wondering what the optimal setting would be in Reason 10 since I have discovered that on my Mac OS X (Sierra) unit, it coughs and sputters with V3.1.1 and more often than not gives a ” Computer Too Slow” message. The system I am using it on is powerful enough (with the audio and sample libraries on separate drives in an external RAID unit) and I never have any Audio Unit issues with Logic.

I do find that if I run the SD3 in Reason without opening up the plug-in window, it will play smoother.

    thanx

I have had no problems running with cores set to 1 in SD3 inside Reason. Testing with other settings have caused the Reason 10 Audio Engine to stop.
It’s not like I have see any need for having more cores reserved for SD3.
I’m running a MBP on High Sierra.
Are you having performance issues with SD3, with cores set to 1?

Sorry for the delay. I was actually playing all week with Reason and SD3. 🙂

Setting the cores to 1 definitely did the trick. It didn’t choke even on my most demanding kit preset. I’m wagering a guess that Reason throttles the amount of resources a VST is allowed to have. However, since it hasn’t presented any real issues between Logic and Reason, I’ll leave it at one for now.
