This is a clear bug: when playing legato lines or chords via midi keayboard there are constantly hanging notes that need to be stopped via GUI or repeating some note that could be touching the same string (has to be guessed since there is no forced sting selection)
Also the articulation selection via key switches is cumbersome and not working reliably, most of the competitor products also support velocity sensitive mapping of articulation e.g. damped for low velocities and slapped for high velocities – is this feature messing or somehow hidden?

Can you record a MIDI file where those hanging notes occur, and post it here so we can have a look at it?

I tried to record the hanging note symptom playing a fast triplet sequence of single and chord notes (all very staccato/ Jaco style), and you can see from the grid editor that some notes keep hanging. Also there seems to be a strange quantization effect, i.e. some played notes get swallowed or come later, like if the string mapping algortihm needs some thinking time. Did you also recognize that playing tritone intervals (typical funk phrases) is either not recognized or put even to the same string – something that a real bass player would never do! So you really need to improve the string mapping algorithm a lot°!
BR Markus
Thanks! Is it possible for you to record the MIDI in a DAW and send it – so we can see how you played it before it was converted by EZbass?
Regarding the string algorithm – EZbass doesn’t one. EZbass automatically picks the tone that sounds the best for the current library for each note. This system is made to be easy to handle, and can – for example – have a seamless slide from the A string to the E string.

Hi Henrik,
here is a similar MIDI recording using Cubase Pro 10.5 using EZbass as plugin, I have not experienced such hanging notes effect so far, so it seems the EZbass midi recording SW gets some kick-ups with fast legato and polyphonic passages.
It’s a pity that EZbass does not have string recognition algorithm since this would add a lot a realism to the playing.
Also the velocity triggered articulations would be great (e.g. damped for low velocity, fingered for middle and slapped for very high)

Hello again, and sorry for the late answer!
If I add the MIDI to Logic, and record it into EZbass, it’s recorded correctly (see screenshot of EZbass vs Logic MIDI)
The MIDI file you attached was MIDI 1 type file, which contained both drums and bass MIDI. Can that have something to do with it?

Hi Henrik,
sorry I wrongly exported both Drum+Bass Midi data together, I have now attached the Bass Midi only
I just imported this Midi file to latest EZbass 1.0.3 and it seems to cope well with just playing the Midi file – HOWEVER: when playing the same phrase manually via midi keyboard it still hangs up and swallows several notes!
Regards
Markus
Hm, that’s strange. What DAW are you using to record the MIDI files you attached? It might have something to do with the DAW cleaning up the MIDI somehow.
Is it the same if you record straight into EZbass in the DAW vs. standalone?

I’m using Cubase 10.5 Pro and I disabled any quantization when playing the Midi bass line, so there can not be any cleaning there.
While when playing the base line directly into EZbass via midi keyboard it keeps hanging up/swallowing some notes, this is esp. true for fast legato phrases and double stops (aka 2 notes played synchronously)

Markus
Hm, I think we need you to record arm both Cubase and EZbass while playing something where these issues occur.
This will record the MIDI both into EZbass and Cubase, and then you can post the Cubase MIDI, and the EZbass MIDI here.
We will analyse the two MIDI files and see why they might differ.
Sorry for the inconvenience here, but we need the data to find the issue 🙂

Hi Henrik,
here are the midi files recorded by both Cubase Pro 10.5 and EZbass in parallel while playing fast and polyphonic phrases, and you can clearly/hear see EZbass gets hanging while Cubase works fine – so something seems to be wrong with EZbass midi recording tool
Regards
Markus
Thanks! We’ll analyze it and will get back to you.

If I record that Cubase midi into EZbass, it sounds fine. So it must probably be something with you controller that EZbass can’t handle. What controller are you using? Are you using the latest drivers for your controller?

I’m using Roland RD-700SX keyboard which is connected to RME Babyface Pro Midi interface for which I have loaded the latest drivers.
Also: I’m not experiencing ANY midi problems with any DAW like Cubase Pro 10.5 or Ableton Live Suite nor any other stand-alone Host program, be it NI Kontakt, Komplete Kontrol, UVIworkstation/Falcon, all Spetrasonics stand-alone instruments or or …
So the problem really is with EZbass host program or with its Midi resolution, chord recognition or the like
BR Markus
Ok, good to know. We will investigate issues with Babyface Pro further.

We have now got our hands on a Babyface Pro. We cannot replicate you hanging notes however. Can you check again that you have the latest drivers and firmware for both you keyboard and your Babyface interface?
Do you experience this problem on simpler grooves as well, or is it just very complex ones like the one you posted that are problematic?
