Hello,
I’ve been using SD2 for several years and created quite a few presets, combining instruments and FX.
I do like the new features, drums and things in SD3, but I’ve continued to use SD2 with my own presets as I’m not certain how to keep using them and include the new features from SD3. Some questions below.
1) Do I lose any features of SD3 by using SD2 kits as base?
Background: I know I can load into SD3 the presets I’ve made in SD2 and they sound identical (enough). The reason to use SD2 kits is that I get to use more instruments, without having to add X-drums (i.e. the SD3-kits are limited to 5 cymbals).
2) To make a mix kit with SD2 and SD3 instruments, do I have to add the “foreign” one as an X-instrument or can I just replace it?
Background: My experience from using replace is that the routing inherits the basic kit channel mappings, even if I use the “add channel” radio button in the assignment window.
3) Can I add additional channels manually in the mixer?
Background: I want to be able to manually route all of the microphones of an added “foreign” X-instrument. AFAIK, SD3 makes a clever guess how to route the additional channels to the existing mixer. The reason is that I want to add separate processing/routing to a a specific instrument.
Thanks /Hasse

If you load a kit in SD2, and load the same kit in SD3 – they will have the same amount of instruments. The difference is that any added instruments are positioned on the left column, while in SD2 the added instruments (x-drums) can be positioned within the kit.

You can do the same routings wether you add a New Instrument in SD3 (called x-drum in SD2), or if you just replace a current instrument.

In Route Instrument Microphones: in the bottom of each drop down list, where you select the target channel, there’s a Add New option, which sends the microphone audio to a new mixer channel.
I hope this helps you on the way 🙂
