I’ve noodled on the Stan Webbb/Chicken Shack version of Poor Boy from the Imagination Lady album since the early 70’s but never covered it with a band. The other day I got the idea to record a cover and thought it shouldn’t be too hard to find a suitable set of grooves in EZ Drummer or Superior Drummer. But I was wrong. And now I’m confused.
I always perceived the song as in around 80 bpm but when I listen to the drums on the end of the solo and the last verse, there are some intense double kicking going on that leads me to believe you should instead think of it as in 160 bpm. And I’m not sure about what kind of beat it is either. I own quite a few MIDI add-on packs already and I can buy more if needed, but listening to the examples for the midi packs I don’t own, I can’t find anything that sounds quite right. If you want double kicks, you’re in metal land, and this is a classic rock song.
If anyone has a suggestion, I’d be grateful. Thanks.
The song in question can be found here, on Spotify and Youtube respectively:
Have you tried activating the Web Shop MIDI feature in the Tap-to-Find and entering a beat there? Other than that, there is nothing that beat that really implies a metal type of double kick. In fact, it’s a rather basic rock beat that you can add the extra kicks in with either the Edit Play Style feature or the Grid Editor.
