How can I edit a midi track in GarageBand using the Grid Editor? I recorded the track in GarageBand using SD3 as a plug in. When I try to edit the midi I can only get it to open in GarageBand’s piano roll. If I click on the grid editor in SD3 I don’t actually see the notes (I can hear and see the signal light in the grid editor row headers, but the grid itself is empty. Any help is appreciated!
Sounds like you recorded the midi in garage band and not SD3. If you do that then it won’t appear in the SD3 editor. You could import the midi into SD3
SD3 with older sdx,s plus Rooms of Hansa and Death & Darkness. Cubase and wavelab current versions. Roland TD50x using all trigger inputs for triggering SD3 only. Windows 11 computer. Various keyboards and outboard gear as well as VST instruments. Acoustic drums: Yamaha 9000 natural wood and Pearl masters. Various snare drums. RME BabyFace Pro FS and Adam A7X monitors
Thanks Mark. Yes I think that is right. I’m using SD as a plug in in Garageband and the MIDI gets recorded to a GarageBand track. I thought as a plug in though I would be able to use the grid editor within GarageBand without additional steps of importing. Garageband doesn’t seem to have native MIDI export functionality. I can record the MIDI from GarageBand into SD easily enough. The only issue there is any beginning measures without drums do not get recorded and then I have to manually try to sync the track once I drop it back into GarageBand.
I’m sure there must be an easier way. I’m a novice for sure with MIDI so still much to figure out and learn!
Recording the MIDI into SD3 from GarageBand is your best bet and isn’t really that difficult. GarageBand doesn’t appear to have any other way to export MIDI, but considering that you are working with bundled software, having entry level features is not a surprise. Once you get your MIDI into SD3, you may as well keep it there so you can further edit it within SD3. You can also build a catalogue of rhythm parts along with song templates in SD3 to use in other songs.
Unless you are using specific features in GarageBand for your drums, such as Drummer, it doesn’t make sense to keep your drum MIDI within GarageBand since SD3’s drum editing is far superior (intentional pun perhaps) to that of GarageBand.
