I’m trying to figure out the best workflow for importing a percussion MIDI file (one MIDI file containing snare, kick, hi-hat, crash cymbal, etc.) into Superior Drummer 3 to ultimately record each as a separate track in Studio One. I have figured out how to instantiate SD3 on an instrument track in Studio One and then explode the midi percussion track into its separate instrument tracks, but, to begin with, am very confused as to why there is only one track, the original instrument track, in the Mixer view.
Using Studio One to extract the tracks also allows you to gather the MIDI channel info and instrument name of each separate track. However, in Superior Drummer, they are not all recognized as such. For instance, a tambourine was identified within Superior Drummer as “Crash Cymbal 3.” Some instruments were not triggering any sound at all.
If anyone has established a better way of doing this, or if there’s another feature I need to use in Superior Drummer, I’d love to hear about it. I know there must be a better way.
Thanks, everyone.
Hi,
while I can’t tell you anything about how Studio One works, I can tell you that SD3 will read GM drum MIDI correctly but if there is GM percussion MIDI (congas, bongos, timbales, tambourine, etc.) it will not map correctly to the drum kits in SD3. That range is occupied by the GM Extended mapping for the drums in Toontrack sample players, with the exception of the Latin Percussion EZX.

To answer your Studio One question, first make sure you have View > Console selected. You should see a bunch of stuff in the lower left side of the Studio One window.
You should see “Channel”, “Group” and “Instruments”. Under “Instruments” you should see “Superior Drummer 3”, there will be a small triangle next to it, it’s a pull down list, select “Expand”. That will show you all the available channels within SD3. Simply check the channels you want exposed and they will appear in the mixer as separate channels.
Hope this helps.
