There is no specific search box for any of the forums. Just the whole site. Would be great if there was but I don’t think anyone at Toontrack thinks it’s necessary to have one.

The forum search and site search our unified. By going to the advanced search page, you can select forum posts, and they will show your search results.

Where is the advanced search page? There is only one search box with no mention of going to an advanced search page. This is endemic of the less than user friendly ‘features’ of this site.

    Seriously, how unfriendly is this?

    Screenshot-2024-11-04-at-7.40.45 AM

Either this or hitting return takes you the advanced search page and on that page you can narrow it down to the forum posts.

Nothing unfriendly about this (or enterprise searches in general)

It’s unfriendly in that every new user that tries to use it sees the initial results being only products and presume this isn’t the forum search they are looking for

Jedi mind trick don’t work here… recognizing what that button at the bottom of the search does.

The forum is integrated into the site.  It’s not a separate entity. You will get product in the search. Saying that it’s unfriendly based on that without resorting to the advanced section is unfounded.

Not to mention that the proof being in the results that the forum search is working is in watching all of these zombie threads being unearthed and roaming the forums once again.

Jord: I guess you don’t spend much time on other forums like the DUC or Gearspace. The search function on the DUC is way better than what’s here. When at their ‘advanced’ page you have all kinds of ways to specify what you’re looking for from the get-go. If I want to search for a user – I can do that easily. And so on. Also here there’s no way to send a PM to anyone. There’s been many a time I’d like to do that with someone but I can’t. This forum s/w could do with a rewrite.

Jack, not only do I frequent enough sites with forums, I’ve built and moderated them for far more years than I want to admit. There are only two purposes for any website: selling a product or disseminating information. The difference between those two sites you mentioned and ToonTrack is the fact that their primary purpose is the dissemination of information. I can name you far more audio forums like them. This site’s first purpose is to sell products and then disseminate information. The forum is integrated into the site. Having a universal search engine is common for enterprise class websites whether you wish to believe it or not.

hehe damn, the jedi mind trick worked on me the first time unfortunately.  The only reason I figured it out was it being inexplicable to not have a forum search function at all, so was the only thing to try.  I presumed “View all Results” would be more, less relevant products.

But you do have a good point that it is a shop website first and foremost.  I am more used to tech sites like Anandtech (RIP) with rather separate forums.  Or just forum sites themselves.

Perhaps just a rewording of “View all Results” to “Include Forums” or even “Advanced”

Using google to search the site is also a solution.

    Cheers all.

Amen. The ‘site’ operator works on both Google and DuckDuckGo as well. Just because this is a shop website first doesn’t excuse not having the basics of having an excellent and functional search facility. There’s no reason this site’s search engine has to be what it is. I call it lazy programming.

And I call it a company knowing its business priorities. That’s not lazy programming. Considering the nature of the instruments we are using, I’d hardly classify any of their programming as “lazy”.

What I’m calling lazy programming is the programming of this website. And that is totally different than the programming of the instruments. Should be totally separate from each other and you’re conflating the two.

Actually, you’re the one who’s conflating a developer’s technical abilities with the decisions and business objectives of the marketing department within a company. The developer(s) responsible for ensuring that the business objectives of the company are met, whether it is in their applications or the website.. Let’s not pretend they are running the show.

This thread has shown why this forum needs a PM or private message function. Any answers that I would post here would not go over well for the general public. I’m outtta here.

Modern search methods incorporate a way to find info even without the searcher knowing precisely what language has been chosen by those who may have answered the searcher’s questions.  On the other end of the scale is a search tool on a forum where the posts are only found based on simplistic logic.  Maybe that latter tool has been the goal. A universal search tool that presents the most possible opportunity to present advertisement material to the potential buyer.
