I’ve finally had more time to play around with EZKeys, and I still like it. I do find that I want:
1. A larger midisong bar or window–the area to which we drag the midi files. Songs are simply longer than the area can hold unless we shrink the sections. But then the sections are small and hard to see and move.
2. More control over the samples: I need to be able to control the amp envelope. (For the grand piano, at least. The release in the midrange is abrupt.)
3. A way to see the type of each section without having to memorize the color codes or having to right-click and then click on Properties. With a larger song area, small text indicating the section could cling to the top of each section.
4. Sometimes I want a more fully developed piano engine–not necessarily Addictive Keys, but more sample layers and more control. Or it would be nice if the two programs could be linked, so that owners of both could use the Addictive Keys pianos to play the arrangements we create in EZKeys, without having to drag the midi files around.
On the other hand, I do like the sound of the current piano–it is raw and not too finely tuned. I like the decisions on the unisons, too. As I said in another post, however, the absence of soft velocity layers is noticeable too often, particularly in the tenor section and the middle C octave. Very difficult to lay down soft chords in the left hand and build a melody in the right–everything starts out a little brash unless I change the velocity curve, and that lowers the amplitude too much. In any event, there is no reason to limit EZKeys to a drafting engine.
5. Consolidate the knobs into one location and have all of the knobs available for each preset. A larger interface would permit this.
Again, however, I must say that the program is a great start, particularly now that the user can create user folders and drag in one’s own midi files easily.
