Is there a way to use EZPlayer Pro to play sounds in an external MIDI module or drum machine without running it inside another program (other than Solo)?
Right now I’m using EZPLayer standalone in Solo and just dragging patterns from the EZPlayer browser onto a track in Garageband, then playing that track to trigger the hardware drum machine’s sounds over MIDI. I would like to be able to play the patterns right in the EZPlayer browser but get the audio from the external device.
The Toontrack website says lists requirements of “Virtual drum sampler or hardware drum machine” and the manual states:
“EZplayer is a MIDI organizer capable of driving any sound source that can be controlled by MIDI, including software drum samplers such as Toontrack Superior and EZdrummer but also any hardware drum machine you may have available. All it requires is a module (software or hardware instrument) capable of producing sounds from MIDI.”
The manual gives no directions for doing this and searching the forum I’m getting the idea that nobody else is interested in using EZPlayer this way. Any ideas, or am I trying to do something that isn’t possible?
I put in a support request 5 days ago and still no response…..
Hi,
your post was not in the EZplayer Support section for registered users, so that’s probably why no one has replied.
I noticed you didn’t have proper access, so that’s fixed now.
While it is possible to use EZplayer Pro in Garageband, it gets a bit convoluted compared to using Logic, Cubase, Pro Tools, DP, Reaper, etc.
Part of it is the MIDI channel filtering and part of it is the thru monitoring that’s only active when a Track is selected (normally).
If you enable the Multitrack recording feature, you should be able to use EZplayer Pro like I show in the attached video clip.

Many thanks, John, I was logged in to the forum, but none of the product-specific user forums were showing, but now they are. Other than the automated reply, I never did get a response to my support request. I guess I’m good for now, though.
The video was a big help and I am able to use EZPlayer to play internal and external midi drum sounds through Garageband now. The key was enabling multitrack recording. Using the MidiO AU plugin I’m able to get Garageband to output MIDI to external devices.
I’m still wondering if it’s possible to use EZPlayer standalone (with Solo) to trigger a MIDI module or drum machine. The above nmethod works well on my Mac, but I don’t have any EZPlayer-compatible DAW software on my PC. I can get my USB interfaces to work with EZPlayer/Solo for MIDI input, but there doesn’t seem to be a way to send MIDI out. Any ideas?
