The state of the NIC (on/off) is part of the Computer ID that EZmix uses as part of the authorization process. I would recommend authorizing EZmix with the NIC in the state (on/off) that you plan on using the plugin.

Apparently this is still the case, and this programmed “feature” is nuts.  So, to get my authorization code from this website, I plug in a USB wireless, get the authorization code, copy it, and authorize the software.  I then remove the USB wireless as I don’t want my music computer hooked up to the internet if at all possible.  But no….now the computer is different somehow and I have to spend another authorization to get EZMix to work if I’m offline?  Is this really how this works?

    No.

If you want to authorize EZmix with an ‘offline’ system you need to use the ‘offline’ method.

    – Start with the USB wireless unplugged.
    – Start the software so the Computer ID is generated with this ‘offline’ configuration.
    – Then plug in the USB wireless and authorize at toontrack.com
    – Once you’ve generated your authorization code and got the email confirmation, unplug the USB wireless.

Yes, that is what I figured out last night, although of course I had to burn up one of my authorization codes within 4 hours of installing the software in order to fix this problem. I think in the installation instructions you might want to warn the consumer that your software considers connecting to the Internet via USB wireless adapter to be a major structural change to the computer, and it will then invalidate your installation. So, what happens if I plug in other USB accessories, like a memory stick or an external hard drive? Will those invalidate the installation as well?

USB memory sticks or hard drives don’t change how the hardware configuration is broadcast to the OS so they shouldn’t cause a new Computer ID to be generated.

Thanks for the info, although the “shouldn’t” makes me a little nervous. Before I blow all my installations within 24 hours by making the same mistake, I have a laptop that I use for some remote work. I understand that I can install the software on two computers at once, correct? So, if I install the software on my laptop and then flip off the (hardwired) switch that shuts off wireless reception on the laptop, will I have the same problems with it invalidating my installation?

You need to authorize the software with the computer in the hardware state you will be using it.

If you have the wireless hardware ‘active’ when you generate the Computer ID and authorize, you need to keep the wireless hardware ‘active’ or you will trigger a new Computer ID the first time you launch the software with the wireless hardware ‘inactive’.

You can authorize from any computer so you can leave your ‘remote work’ laptop ‘offline’ and authorize that machine from a different computer. That’s what I do. My studio rig isn’t ‘online’. I authorize my Toontrack software via my laptop that IS ‘online’. To authorize my studio rig, I write the Computer ID on a piece of paper and use my laptop (‘online’) to go to the Toontrack website to authorize. Then I write the authorization code and input the code in the ‘offline’ studio rig.

Keep in mind that you will never run out of authorizations. You have 4 authorizations to freely add/remove. Then, when you need a 5th, 6th, 7th, etc., you contact Toontrack via the Support Portal or through this Support Forum and we can free up an authorization.

BTW, I use the word ‘shouldn’t’ because we are talking about a computer here. Things that ‘shouldn’t happen’ happen all the time for no good reason

Thanks, that’s reassuring. I’m loving the plugin but hating the protection scheme, although I understand why there has to be one of some sort.
