“About once a year someone comes on and asks, “hey, are you going to update EZKeys?”

    Hey I resemble that remark!

    Hello, “jazzmandan”,

The development (or lack thereof) of EZKeys raises a question in my mind:

“What came first the chicken or the egg?”

Many years ago Toontrack devloped an incredibly interesting software program titled, “EZKeys”. They then ceased to develop the product any further and of course sales plummeted.

Then in their Board Meetings the question would be asked, “Hey, maybe we should re-work/improve our EZKeys product?

The response of course is, “nah, not many people are purchasing the product, maybe next year”.

Another year drags on and they have another Board Meeting and the question is asked again.

My question to Toontrack would be:

Did you not have enough sales in the begining or have the sales dropped because the program has not been updated for years?

I’ll leave that rhetorical question for Toontrack to answer.

Meanwhile, I look forward to their development of EZBass and a lot of the other fine products that Toontrack produces.

But, I mourn the death of EZKeys. Like a fine dinner that tasted so good at first, but then a week or so later the thought of eating last weeks dinner, doesn’t have much appeal.

    Just sad.

No answer after all these years IS Toontracks’ answer. Sad. One simple thing, and I’d do my happy dance: a scalable GUI. Scalable GUIs are blossoming like flowers across the (updated) plugin landscape, but not here. I’m not sure these coders know how to do it, because clearly it can be done.

Dear Toontracks: We’re big boys and girls. Just TELL US you’re not/can’t update it so we can all stop wasting time and keystrokes. Ignoring us is the biggest form of disrespect.

    Hello Billy86.

I agree with you that a scaleable GUI would be a large improvement. Like yourself…I’d take that, if that is all that they would do.

Like you said, “Just TELL US you’re not/can’t update it so we can all stop wasting time and keystrokes.”

However, remember as the moderators have been saying for over 4 YEARS now, “we do not discuss what we’re working on.”

So, I’m going to assume that that means, “we also do not discuss what we’re NOT working on.”

So, all of us interested in ANY kind of improvement in EZKeys will just have to return to this post in 6 months or 1 year and repeat this process all over again.

I know, I know…I shake my head in bewilderment.

Sadly I’ve given up on EZKeys a long time ago. No point in investing money in a product that the company themselves won’t invest in.

Really a shame though, it could have been an excellent product had they invested the time and resources into it. Though lesson learned, I’ll be weary about any other new products they introduce until I see solid proof they are committed to the product and won’t abandon it as they did with EZKeys.

TT is really a great company, however I find this very disrespectful to the users who invested both large amounts of time and money into a product they have walked away from and won’t even admit it. Yet amazingly they are still releasing midi packs.

Let’s see if the long awaited EZ Bass they just announced for May release has a scalable GUI. As is the GUI on EZ Keys is truly painful to work with. As someone who has studied User Experience best practices, at this point in the product’s life it fails miserably. It is too bad because what it DOES is really cool.

Ezkeys has a gen1 gui. So does EZD2. So does EZmix2.

The newer releases, S3, the not yet released EZbass has the next gen interface.

I’m sure, at some point, all of the products will be next gen architecture. Resizable. When? Idk, when they are done. I don’t have any info and couldn’t share and info if I knew anyway due to an NDA and just being a forum tech.

When Toontrack makes official announcements (like with EZbass), we’ll all know.

EZKeys 2 needs the GUI of EZBass. It would also be cool if they added internal plugin support. EZKeys would be dopeAF with an instance of Kontakt inside of it.

I wonder what we will get first EZKeys 2 or EZStrum

    Hello Ajiuo,

The question regarding the update to EZkeys 2 is…”How old are you now”?

You’ll hear responses like, “well they haven’t updated EZmix”. I still have no idea what that means. It’s also not raining where I live and I have no idea what that means either.

It is true that they will update EZkeys when they update EZkeys, but if you’re looking for a date…well, I would suggest you pick a date somewhere in the future and be prepared to pick a new date after that date has come and gone.

As a non-keyboard playing music producer, I’ve found EZKeys to be my goto plugin for creating midi to use with the EZKeys instruments and a host of others. It has been one of the most useful plugins I’ve ever purchased. I don’t think I’m alone in saying that

In a few days time, we’ll be able to get the new EZBass and it looks great, I have to say. But it also makes me wonder just how much better EZKeys could be with the same next gen GUI and functionality.

I know that we’ll only get to find out if it’s going to happen when it actually does. Devs have a frustrating habit of never divulging their roadmap.

    Ah well! Dream on!

EZbass has made me realize how desperately EZkeys needs to be updated.

Exactly my reaction too. Change the EZKeys GUI to match Superior 3 and EZBass. Also I want EZKeys to work with the two others when it comes to finding matching phrases etc.

I would really love to see EZKeys with the new GUI. It would be so much easier to build a song with a scalable window.

Can’t they just take the sound library and midi library of EZ keys and put it in the EZbass gui? Just that would maybe be enough and fantastic!

SD3 and EZBass are far more than just an updated GUI. While they have the latest and constantly updated technology EZKeys was abandoned years ago and remains stuck in 2012.

There’s no Tap To Find, Conversion From Audio, Grid/Midi Editor, Song Creator, Edit Play Style, Music Notation Editor, Scale/Modes feature. I wouldn’t be all that concerned with what the GUI looks like, when there isn’t all that much under the hood to begin with. The only ‘updates’ you’ll get are additional static midi file packs to bolster their sales. And amazingly EZKeys is the same price as EZD2 and EZBass.

Also how about a few classic 70’s and 80’s synths instead of yet another piano or organ. EZD2 has 42 EZX expansion packs while EZKeys only has 13 instruments and 56 midi packs to EZD2’s 89 midi packs.

TT makes excellent products, but I believe they definitely dropped the ball with EZKeys.
