Hello, I like the sounds of the EZ Drummer kits I have but none of the MIDI packs I’ve bought from Toontrack work for me (not technically but musically). Instead I like to use it as an instrument and control with a keyboard or pad controller (I’m too lazy to program anything). My question is whether or not my method is the best for my situation.
Currently (in Logic Pro) I create a new instrument track using EZ drummer and choose the multi output so each “mic” can be processed separately in the auxes. I manually play the kick, snare, hihat and ride with my fingers on one pass (track), deleting the aux channels dedicated to the other mics I’m not using. Then I create, respectively, individual stereo instrument tracks for toms and for cymbals and play each of those over separate passes. Basically, I’m creating the whole kit from 3 instances of EZ Drummer and can control EQ and dynamics for everything separately to my liking.
Is having multiple instances a problem? I’m certainly not overtaxing my machine at all, but could this create other problems I’m unaware of? This is probably even stupider but if I leave the stereo OH or room mics on should I leave them on in all three instances or will one capture the sounds played before or after it (on other tracks)? Hope that makes sense, I can be dense!
Thanks all,
Mark
Hi,
I wouldn’t do it that way, since it increases the memory usage by 3, among things.
Why not use one instance, have the control for each of the 8 stereo outputs in the Logic mixer and then overdub the MIDI?
You can always create MIDI tracks that are routed to the EZdrummer Instrument Track if you wish to overdub on a separate track.

Thank you John,
My technique is the result of trying to do what you’ve suggested, however I haven’t enough experience to know how to overdub in a midi track yet. I swear 95% of the things I CAN do in Logic are plain dumb luck. I’m a bass player, what can I say? I’m learning as I go.
At least I know I’m aiming in the right direction! This forum’s helpful and just reading other posts has solved most of my dilemmas.
Thanks
Mark
