Did you ever find a solution, I am the new noob with the same question

To me is seems like the original poster selected a preset when it should have been “None”. With “None” selected it might have just worked right away, or he then may have had to manual map his head unit to the required notes in EZD2.

If he had literally saw “A#1 > G#-2” in his instruments properties panel, he probably had the Alesis mapping preset selected when he didn’t need to. Total speculation though, unless he comes back to comment about it to confirm.

What do you have selected here?…

I’d already tried that and a bunch of other things before I posted here. There is no manual mapping in the Surge module or EZD2, which is the problem. Toontrack sent me this, which I haven’t got around to trying.

”Unfortunately, we have had similar reports from other Alesis e-drum users. This usually has to do with the proper CC data not being sent from the module for EZD2 to use.

We always recommend using the factory/default preset for the module along with the Alesis preset in EZD2.

EZD2 can only use and respond to the MIDI as it is received from the module. MIDI not getting through into EZdrummer 2 can hardly have anything to do with installation of the software. Is it possible the checkbox for the device is not ticked/checked-off (in front of the device name) in EZdrummer 2’s Settings > Audio/MIDI setup > MIDI device area? Once the device is checked-off, the Apply button needs to be used to save those changes.

Some ASIO drivers can cause crashes or memory corruptions, so it could be worth testing with a different driver (and restarting EZdrummer after changing it).

    Best Regards,
    Toontrack Music”

    Unfortunate.

These recommendations aren’t from personal experience, but I’ve researched it a few times. You’d have to spend more cash though. Start using EZD2 in a DAW that can change incoming midi notes in real-time. Reaper is the cheapest option and I’ve seen a video of this working well. Ableton 10 Intro is on sale right now and almost the same price as Reaper. Ableton 10 cannot support cymbal chokes right now, but Ableton 11 can, which is coming out in a few months. If you buy Ableton 10 now, you can upgrade to 11 for free when it comes out. Cubase “Artist” and “Pro” do this as well. As I’m sure a lot of programs that don’t boast this feature may have it. I use Pro Tools, I don’t think Pro Tools can do this.

Hope that helps. I haven’t done any of this myself. If you end up spending cash, confirm for yourself the DAW has the feature you need. Choking cymbals (aftertouch signals) might get complicated with this work flow, I have no clue. A lot of these DAW’s have free trials.

**Or as you may already know. Spend more cash and crossgrade to Superior Drummer 3.

Thanks. I wasn’t really looking for a workaround though, I was after a solution. Translation in a DAW seems like a potential extra layer of latency.
I already run Reaper in the studio, but wanted to get standalone EZD2 running so I can practise without the crappy built in module samples.
Anyway, as suggested by TT, I did a factory reset of the module and I’ve tried both None and the Alesis preset. No dice I’m afraid.
    Hope Lerxst has more luck.

I was able to get my Hi Hat working closed and open during live play into Pro Tools with EZDrummer 2 running – I was getting some odd results with ALESIS setting in Toontrack MIDI settings so I when to NONE.  The half-open hi hat seems to be hit or miss in Toontrack.

Cymbal choke is still a bust.  I can change the value of a rim shot, because when I click the rim a value on my Alesis Command comes up in MID and I can change that value with .  This does not work on Choke, so I am not sure how to send that to Toontrack.  When I choke the cymbal there is no MID change, so when I adjust on MID after choking, it just changes my cymbal.

Try reseaching in Google “alesis surge aftertouch ezdrummer 2”. I don’t own your kit, but I do know your cymbals do not send aftertouch signals, which is an issue. Cymbal choke information is not a midi note, it’s an aftertouch message. There’s workarounds which you’ll read about, not sure if there’s a perfect solution without spending cash though. Good luck.

When I choke the cymbal there is no MID change

Just remap the midi data and chokes will work with Alesis module.

Where did you get this info? Tobi from AbletonDrummer checked it with his BETA (and of course: nothing) and you won’t find anything in the Release Notes so far.

Hi guys I had a similar issue as described. So got my Surge kit and happy I will play it with EZ Drummer connected everything. Then picked the “alesis” e drum kit in ezd2 and the hihat was always open, also while holding the pedal down.
But I fixed it! I went into the settings in the module and changed the midi note the module is sending when holding the pedal down.
Hold the hihat pedal down and hit the hihat, then click voice/beat button, keep clicking until you see “MID”. Then with the arrows choose another note your drum kit is sending to your PC. You basically go one note down and hit the hihat while holding the pedal down. Going through all of them you will eventually find the note for the closed hihat midi note in EZDrummer2. In my case I was happy with nr 12, previously it was 42.
    Hope it helps someone! 🙂
