I am running the latest EZDrummer 3 with the latest Reaper 64. My system is an Intel 8-Core 3.5ghz Mac Pro with 256GB Memory. OSX Sonoma 14.7, all drives are SSD.
Main interface is an Apogee Ensemble, but the problem also persists with a Focusrite 2i4 and a generic USB to MIDI interface. Output is from a Roland TD-17 into any of the MIDI devices. When I switch devices to troubleshoot, that device is the only one connected to the machine and the other devices are disabled/ignored in Reaper.
I have about 1-2ms of latency that I can’t seem to get rid of, and it doesn’t matter if I’m actually recording a track or not. Even if just the VST is loaded and “listening” to that MIDI input, there’s the slightest bit of latency in EZDrummer 3 that makes it unusable. I’ve tried different kits and the problem persists. (Metal Machine, all of the Singer/Songwriter pack kits, DKFH).
What can I check in EZDrummer settings to try to rectify this? I’m reasonably certain it’s not my computer itself. I can’t find any settings inside of the EZD interface to adjust any kind of buffer or other setting.
Any insight would be awesome. Thanks!
You can hear 2ms latency? It’s more likely to be Reaper and any devices than EZD. My DAW tells me the latency going on and the more plugins I’m running, the more the latency. You can test if EZD is lagging by clicking on any instrument in the Drums tab. I get none doing that but some when playing my ekit through EZD with plugins in the DAW.
Agree with Mick. Human ear can’t perceive a 1/1000th of a second. It must be way more.
You did not mention buffer settings which is the very first place to look.
You don’t check anything in EZD if you’re using a DAW. the DAW is responsible for latency. Try adjust your buffer settings in you DAW or in your Audio Interfaces preferences.

I also agree. 2 ms of latency is optimal. It is also imperceptible to the human ear. You’ll never achieve 0 ms as your interfaces need a buffer as well as your DAW needs buffer space to process the instruments and effects.

I can hear it, yeah. My drummer can too. Maybe it’s slightly more than 2Ms but it’s juuuuuuust enough to throw everything off. If I have my actual drum head turned up in the mix along with EZD3, the hits from EZD are ever so slightly lagging behind the sound from the TD17. It’s tiny but perceptible enough that my drummer (two different people now) can tell and can’t work around it.
20ms is around the area where it is perceptible. What is your audio buffer size? As well, are you using any latency inducing plugins?
