Hey all-
This is my first post (I believe) and it’s going gloriously stupid thus far. I have the “Ezdrummer crashes after updating problem.” Though mine is more like, “I gave toontrack more money for another product and now ezdrummer 2 and ezmix doesnt work.” I know you get this a lot. I’ve read a lot on it. I’ve followed instructions, gone rounds with support, spoken to other users … nothing seems to fix the issue.
In my case, after purchasing ezdrummer three – all sessions I was working on with ezdrummer 2 will no longer open. As an added bonus, ezmix no longer contains it’s own libraries and only shows the add-on that I purchased. This has rendered my sessions (and mixing presets) totally useless. When I attempt to open sessions that used ezd2, I get the crash message. So far – I have deleted every known instance of ezd2 and reinstalled. I have deleted all toontrack and started over including the product manager portal. I have enabled secret folders and erased the “midi” files as mentioned in a post from 2016. I’ve ensured that the files are downloading to the specific folder that reaper recognizes as “where to find plugins.” I’ve reassigned that folder after re-downloading the plugin and libraries 50 times.
I’m at a total loss. A total, total loss. Obviously – I’m doing it wrong.
Toon track seems generally incapable of helping (let’s go with that as opposed to, “gee this would be extremely easy if we handled it over the phone.”). I’ve been told somewhere in the ballpark of twenty times that an “old update” must be somewhere on my computer and that I have to delete it. I have tried desperately to accomplish that, if that’s the issue, but either files are hidden in places that Jimmy Hoffa wouldn’t know about or this advice is meaningless.
I have no idea what to do. It’s almost a month later and my ezdrummer2 sessions won’t open and ezmix still doesn’t contain it’s own materials. To the best of my knowledge, everything is as updated as it can be. I have deleted all prior instances of these plugins and their updates. Standalones, by the way, open and ezmix standalone contains all presets as usual.
Now, to be fair, I’m sure that this is some simple, ridiculous, comically dumb thing that I’m not getting. After all, I write trite pop lyrics and I count to four for a living. Beyond those terrible sins, can I please ask for your help? I’m sure that there’s system speak and specifics that could better assist you in diagnosing the problem, but it appears to be an issue affecting people in a broad capacity. I’m running windows 10 and I use reaper. Pretty cut and dry stuff (my set-up is like the boom chuck of computer setups).
Please advise me on how to fix this. Or at least grab some coffee and help me decide how to best smash this computer. Those are the only available options I currently have, but I press the coffee and use good water. So, at least we’ve got that going for us.
Tommy
OK well…. I liked the Jimmy Hoffa reference so I just had to respond…. I also notice you are on EZD2 2.0. Have you updated to EZD2.2.3? Some of the newer EZDrummer EZXs require it…
EZDrummer 3 is a totally separate product and the software itself shouldn’t impact EZD2 (I don’t know what to say about EZMix…. nothing you’ve done should be impacting it…. but one thing at a time)

Brad’s got it (as usual ;). Update EZD. Good eye.
If that’s not the case. Can you check the Reaper VST paths. Also in Product Manager. Sometimes there’s error messages that pop up in tiny text under the product in question. Make sure you don’t see those… or follow their directions. It seems only the older VST2 or .dll are not registering. Maybe that path got reset in Reaper.
The Hoffa comment was good.

Thanked by: BradHey Brad,
Everything you’re saying is completely logical and stands to reason. Which is why I may need you to say it in a more pedestrian, bad poetry type of way. In other words – I need you to speak “piano player” to me (as a pianist, I only really understand things over block chords and pretend brooding).
Yes. To the best of my knowledge, everything is completely updated. I’m accomplishing this in the portal and deleting instances that no longer apply as it asks – while updating those plug-ins whenever an update appears. I have no other instance of ezd2 dll on the pc other than the one and it’s in the correct folder. Reaper is pointed at that folder and every other plugin works as per usual.
I have absolutely no idea how downloading ezd 3 influenced ezd2 and especially what triggered ezmix to not contain its own factory presets in the daw plugin. To complicate things further – the standalone versions work fine. I wish I had any further information. My immediate reaction was to delete everything and start again. But this solicited the same results … so yeah, I suppose it could be that some weird past update is lurking in the shadows of my pc and that it’s confusing the pathway? On the other hand – if I search the ezdrummer 2 dll, only the latest updated version shows in the results, sitting comfortably in its “plug-ins folder” location and nothing seems to be impeding it from talking to reaper.
What’s brought me here is that I absolutely couldn’t get this message through to toon track. Here is a recreation of the ten conversations I’ve had with toon track:
Me: … yes, I hear you. But there isn’t another dll on my computer and I’ve updated ezd2 thirty times.
TT: Are you using the latest update?
Me: Yes. As I just explained, I’m using the latest update.
TT: Hi, this is someone else from toon track. I didn’t bother to read the former messages. I bet it’s an update issue.
Me: Please don’t say update. Please. Can it be anything else? I’ll accept user error, stupidity, tell me I’m a moron and don’t deserve nice things. Anything other than it’s some former version and I need to update.
TT: …
Me: you’re gonna say it aren’t you?
TT: …
Me: well?
TT: knock knock
Me: Who’s there ?
TT: Up
Me: Up who?
TT: Up Date
Me: I hate you.
and scene.
Right, well the “update” advice was simply based on the tag on your first posting, which is 2.2.0. So of course that’s low hanging fruit to this old geezer. I will create a snapshot on my Windows Virtual Machine and see if I can figure out what is happening. Now I may ask a few things that you went over with the TT support, the nature of the beast.
So, first EZDrummer 2, does the EZDrummer app open standalone?
In Reaper, what message do you see when you try to open a session with EZDrummer 2?
What version of Reaper are you running?
Are you running 64bit or 32bit?

Latest version of Reaper? You asked Reaper to rescan all plugins?
Did you do a fresh install of EZD2 and EZmix after you ran into this problem?

Hey Brad,
Let me attempt to answer your questions in the most straightforward manner that I can:
“So, first EZDrummer 2, does the EZDrummer app open standalone?”
My ezd2 standalone opens and works fine. Likewise, ezmix standalone contains all factory presets. They were great in standalone.
“In Reaper, what message do you see when you try to open a session with EZDrummer 2?”
It reads: EZDrummer has crashed. Crash dump file at c- user- name- app data- local-temp-ezdrummer-version2.1.1
I realize that this old version sends up red flags and would appear to be the culprit. But I don’t have any instance of version 2.1.1 on the pc. I’ve updated, deleted, redownloaded, updated and pointed the correct folder many times. I cannot find any version other than one, in the correct plugin folder and its the latest version. Is this crash log telling me I need the old version perhaps?
“What version of Reaper are you running?”
Reaper V6.70
“Are you running 64bit or 32bit?”
64 bit. Although, ezd2 was always 32bit and still lists itself in my reaper vst plugin list as 32bit. I have downloaded 64 bit and it’s library a ton of times.
“Does your VSTi list look have the highlighted path? Please post a screen print of it.”
I have pointed the folder there and to a variety of other places hoping to fix things. The dll is located in my main folder called “plugins.” I keep all plugins in that folder and they open perfectly. I had kept ed2 in that very folder and never had an issue until purchasing ezd3. Toon track product manager knows to download things to this folder as well.
The actual version of ezd2 downloaded to the computer is 2.2.3 – all other instances have been deleted, although in product manager, in the downloads list, version 2.1.8 say this: download status: deleted – installation status: installed* – *mixed versions are installed…
all other former downloads say deleted and *a new version is installed.
I hope this information was exactly what you needed. I can’t thank you enough for your kindness and patience.
Check this out: EZmix2 is showing up as version 2.1.1 in reaper – it also says it has an update available. But the product is updated and lists as up to date in product manager. The latest update is on the pc and all other updates are deleted … What a mess.
Also – I forgot to mention – after the crash error, I get the C run time error and the screen closes out. Only happens with sessions that currently have ezd2 in the tracks or when attempting to open ezd2 in reaper.

EZdrummer version: 2.2.3
Operating system: Windows 10
Hey Tommy,
Sorry for the slow response….. home reno’s. Hope you don’t mind me suggesting what @shootie mentioned, uninstall everything. EZD2, EZD3, EZMix… etc… through the windows standard uninstaller. Then do a scan to see if anything EZDrummer shows up and remove it as well.
Then install everything one at a time. Check your DAW and move on to the next.
Really the only thing I can think at this point.
