What exactly are you trying to accomplish? If you don’t want system sounds coming through then you can turn them off in the Mac’s control panel. Other than that there’s no way to have any application running inside MacOS have exclusive usage of the audio interface that I know of.

CoreAudio is not designed for any single application to hijack it. You will need to rethink your workflow involving Superior Drummer. As Jack mentioned, perhaps a little more detail would help us help you.

Jordan, there are other applications that can do this, such as Roon.

However, yes, the idea is that other applications cannot output audio whilst SD3 is doing so.

Jack – where would one do that? I’ve looked around in settings, and done some googling, and without installing third-party software I don’t see a way to effectively “mute” all apps other than SD3. Even doing so with a third-party app is a pain to do so and then restore when done.

I’m not talking about other apps but MacOS systems sounds. Those can be muted in the systems preferences ‘sound’ area. Yous till haven’t told us why you want to do this.

Roon short circuits CoreAudio which would find itself breaking pending major CoreAudio updates. That is hijacking and is not standard CoreAudio behavior, regardless of Roon’s capability.

Superior Drummer is a software instrument so it has to play within the CoreAudio rules in order to receive and output data. Otherwise it would break DAWs. Their standalone app is nothing more than a wrapper for the plugin. Considering that ToonTrack has played well with the rules, their software has withstood macOS updates without issues. I wouldn’t expect them to break with this.

Jack, I did reply to that question – “however, yes, the idea is that other applications cannot output audio whilst SD3 is doing so”.

Jordan, the explanation of a software instrument within a wrapper makes sense. There are plenty of drummers using SD3 solely with electronic kits and not going anywhere near a DAW (in fact, there’s direct support for ekits in the SD3 wrapper application) but if there’s a risk of things breaking on core audio updates then that is fair. Apps like Roon have a more frequent update schedule so I guess they might handle such concerns that way.

I suppose another option is to either

    • use the built in soundcard (onboard) for the mac for system sounds, and assign the external audio interface exclusively to SD3
    • buy a second external interface that is solely for SD3

If you’re referring to the Audio/MIDI setting, that is pretty much a hook into CoreAudio and CoreMIDI API and are pretty much agnostic.

The MIDI/e-drum setting is a part of Superior Drummer itself and works within standalone and a DAW.

Even though you may not want to use a DAW, there are other apps more suited to live use such as MainStage and GigPerformer which are far more robust than simply using standalone.

Another app that you might want to look into alongside the above is Loopback by Rogue Amoeba. It has audio routing capabilities and you might be able to toggle some apps off without short circuiting CoreAudio (loopback registers in CoreAudio as a virtual device).

If all you’re worried about is system sounds then just turn them off in MacOS control panel in the ‘sound’  section. It’s that simple. That’s what I do so I don’t have system sounds happening when working in my daw.

Cheers Jordan, loopback might work for me (or BlackHole)
