used the “JS: MIDI/midi_logger” in Reaper to check on this…
(In hindsight, the logging in Reaper’s “ReaControlMIDI” is probably easier to read though…)

it looks like, normally, the default MIDI from EZP sends a Note On with the appropriate velocity, and then another Note On with a velocity of 00, equivalent to a Note Off.

if the play/pause button is hit before the Note Off gets a chance to fire, the VST you’re sending the MIDI data to won’t ever receive it.  Depending on the VST, it sounds like it may exhibit exactly the behavior you describe.

    As for how to solve…?
I’m afraid I don’t have any suggestions other than your current workaround or using a MIDI panic button in your sequencer each time.
    Obviously, neither are ideal.

Also, double-clicking the groove instead of using the play/pause button will have it play back only once instead of on repeat.  So if you’re just auditioning grooves, that might work as an alternative workaround.
