I am curious if any of the libraries contain DW X-Shell Toms? I have multilayered samples I had purchased from another site for these but have yet to see this in any library. They have a unique sound different from any other tom. See attachment for DW’s info on this pattern. Apparently it is available as a custom option for their collector line according to a quick search: (Wondering if there are any libraries using this custom setup for toms?)
DW does not offer specific, pre-defined tom models that <em class=”eujQNb” data-processed=”true”>only use X-Shell construction. Instead, <strong class=”Yjhzub” data-processed=”true”>X-Shell is one of several specialized shell manufacturing techniques offered as an option within the <strong class=”Yjhzub” data-processed=”true”>Collector’s Series line, allowing for custom orders.
DW X-Shell Construction
The X-Shell construction is a proprietary DW innovation where the wood plies are oriented diagonally (in an “X” pattern) to cross the vertical and horizontal grains, supposedly providing a lower fundamental pitch.
Identifying Toms with X-Shell Construction
DW’s shell technology, known as Specialized Shell Configuration (SSC), involves using different shell types (HVX, VLT, VLX, etc.) for different drums within the same custom kit to achieve an optimal blend of tone and pitch.
Therefore, to find DW toms with X-Shell construction:
<ul class=”KsbFXc U6u95″ data-processed=”true”>
<li data-hveid=”CAgQAA” data-processed=”true”><strong class=”Yjhzub” data-processed=”true”>Specify when ordering a custom kit: X-shells are typically available on DW Collector’s Series drums. When ordering a new kit from a dealer or the factory, you would specify this shell option as part of the custom build process.
<li data-hveid=”CAgQAQ” data-processed=”true”><strong class=”Yjhzub” data-processed=”true”>Look for used/custom models with specific descriptions: When buying used, look for listings that explicitly state the drums have X-Shell construction. Because each SSC kit is a “perfect blend” of shell types, a used kit may have a mix of VLT rack toms and X-Shell floor toms, for example.
<li data-hveid=”CAgQAg” data-processed=”true”><strong class=”Yjhzub” data-processed=”true”>Note: The X-Shell option is primarily for <strong class=”Yjhzub” data-processed=”true”>maple shells in the Collector’s line. Other series like the Performance or Design series use standardized HVX or 7-ply maple shells, not the specialized X-shell construction.
As a DW fanatic I would LOVE to see this happen. There’s precious little DW drums in the SDX. I think the only one that has DW drums is Death and Darkness which I already have.

Thanked by: drumjack52 and Scott EshlemanThe new Infinity Grid EZX has mainly DW drums. Progressive Foundry SDX, Alt-Rock EZX, Made of Metal EZX, Modern Metal EZX, Metalheads EZX, Progressive EZX, Metal EZX also have DW drums
It could be difficult to source a kit as the information about the specialised shell construction is not readily available. Request noted though.
