Hi,
I am interested in routing EZDrummer 3 drums to isolate and play around with the individual hits. I am using the Main Room Studio Basic kit with Ableton 11.
As a test, I took a drum beat with the kit and left it un-routed so that it’s all playing through one track.
I then duplicated the track and routed this duplicate to individual tracks so that I had a group which contained tracks for each of the sounds of the kit. I made sure that all the sounds were represented.
What I found, to my dismay, was that the routed version sounded weaker than the unrouted version.
Is there an explanation for this? I did the test to verify that both versions would sound the same and that nothing would be lost by routing the kit. Should it be the case that nothing is lost? When I compared the two versions, the routed version was playing approx. 3 decibals lower and sounded weaker.
It would be great if you could help shine light on this.
When you do a mult-out, you lose all bus processing that you would have on the stereo output. You will have to supply your own bus processing within your DAW.

Thanked by: Austin_48Pretty much. There may be other effects that don’t have knobs assigned to them as well.

Thanked by: Austin_48That’s a shame, but good to know. There is definitely something lost to the sound when routing in EZDrummer, which makes me not want to route and tweak individual hits with effects. I find this limiting, but I ‘m guessing Superior Drummer would be better set up for individual treatment of the various elements of the kit.
I think it would be nice if all of the bus processing could be maintained in EZDrummer after multichannel routing though.
It’s not a shame. That is how mixing works. Going multi out means bearing the responsibility of a mix engineer and is hardly limiting. There is far more that can be done, once you learn how.

Jord, I just did a stereo and Multi out side by side comparison in Logic Pro X on one of my songs. All the processing controls work in EZ drummer 3 for both and the levels are the same. Should it not be?
Although I do use Multi out (More for a visual when I’m behind my drum kit), I still use the EZdrummer mixer to edit.
It’s far more than simply levels. We’re talking about bus processing for coherence and sitting the mix among other things.
Unless you’re doing anything special with the individual kit pieces, I don’t even see why you wish to go multi-out as you’re not providing any real benefit. Even in SD3, I’m often using the stereo out and apply my favourite bus processing on Logic’s instrument channel. Only time I’ve found myself using multi-out was when I was doing some parallel processing with various UAD & Soundtoys plug-ins. For other songs, there is no benefit.

I don’t do much changing to anything in the EZmixer. I build a lot of my sounds around the drums Guitars, Keys etc. Like I mentioned the multi out is a visual thing and with side by side comparison of stereo and multi-out there was no level or sound difference.
That could be preset dependent. Not all of them would have the same type of bus processing. I would also go as far as to say that if you are not hearing the same that the OP is hearing, there is probably some sort of issue with your listening environment

So you are saying it would be better to just do stereo out if i’m not gonna make major changes?
That really is a question that should be answered on a case-by-case basis. Mixing decisions should be taken in context with the song at hand.
