Make sure you have set up the MIDI Preferences as show below:

This will ensure you don’t create a new MIDI track for every file you drag and drop into your project.

Then, once you create an Instrument Track or use the Instrument Rack/MIDI track method (see the Cubase manual on using VST Instruments), you should be able to just drag a MIDI file from the Groove browser into the Instrument Track or MIDI track.

    thanks for the reply.
under Preferences my screen appears almost exactly as your example.
I noticed the boxes you mention to uncheck were checked. (auto dissolve and import to instrument track). I unchecked those.
however I do not see a box for Import marker and Export marker.
otherwise my Preference box looks as yours.

I’m pretty sure that is the preference menu for Cubase 4, not Cubase essential 4 so YMMV.

it looks like nearly all of my desktop is outdated and obsolete.
I know windows XP is way old. I still have 52% free space on the drive, but things are getting slow.
I know my recording program, Cubase Essential 4 is outdated and the driver updates will not apply. guess I will flounder around a bit and get some thing working.
recording is a hobby for me, but if I get serious my bass player has Cubase5 and his DAW is very cool; two monitors!
