Hi, folks —
My goal with SD3 is to play live from my Roland V-Drums TD-30 module. However I am hearing static and dropouts as I play, making it unusable for my purposes.
Here are some findings and things I tried:
• The issue is unique to SD3; ** it doesn’t happen with EZ Drummer **, even with buffer as small as 64. (It’s the clean sound of EZD that gave me the confidence to fork out for SD3)
• I’ve varied the buffer size on SD3. The static does happen less with larger buffer, but it still happens. (I need a smaller buffer to preserve low latency for live playing.)
• Mac is 2.6 GHz Core i5, with 16 GB RAM with Mojave. Freshly rebooted. Nothing of consequence running. Activity Monitor shows CPU levels low to moderate.
• I tried increasing the number of CPU cores from 4 to 6 (out of 8)
• I tried going down 16 bit samples
• I’ve tried different audio out configurations: headphones on the Mac, audio going out through USB to the TD-30, and audio going through USB to Scarlett 2i4. No avail.
• I’ve only used SD3 in standalone mode.
• I’ve surfed for answers but my experience doesn’t seem to be common out there. The issue looks similar to this: https://www.vdrums.com/forum/advanced/vst-samples/1201447-td-50-sd3-sound-quality-problem
I am concerned because I just shelled out $400 for SD3 plus $100 for an external SSD to host the samples, and so far it’s looking unusable.
What should I try next?
Thank you in advance,
Philip

Hi folks —
I’m the one who started this thread in 2018.
For the record, there was never any resolution to it.
Toontrack just stopped answering my messages when they ran out of easy options.
For me, SD3 has been a disappointing, useless, expensive waste of time.

What interface are you using? I am running one of my units on Mojave and not experiencing this. There has to be a solution out there.
sorry I see it’s a Focusrite. Could you please try and run SD3 through your internal sound card and see if it’s something between SD3 and your interface?
Could you remove your TD-50 from the USB port and see if you get the same result by clicking the GUI?
Are you using an external USB hub?

Just found out I had not installed standalone so it’s installing right now. Hopefully it’s the sound card that has the issue I can always buy another one. Also yes it’s M1. Also the latest steignberg driver didn’t help. I also forgot to mention that I’m running on 8gb of memory: could that be the problem? But at the same time Eazy drummer running smooth no issues.
Ezdrummer doesn’t use anywhere near the memory of SD3. It’s a simpler program without all the articulations and bleeds. 8gig is not really enough and can certainly make a difference to how SD3 works. The noises use describe are from running buffers too low but you may not have the option to put them higher in fear of high latency.
you can’t expect SD3 to play the same as ezdrummer as it’s a bigger program which is a lot more sophisticated and resource hungry.

I am in Superior 3 and sounds are distorted, even when I play them manually. Any ideas? I raised the buffer size in ProTools Ultimate, This is causing deadline project issues. Can anyone help asap?

Superior Drummer 3 version: 3.3.6
Operating system: macOS Ventura (13)
Possibly, but a lot more information would help, interface type (model, specs) Version of Pro Tools, host metrics (RAM, CPU, etc)…
