Hi! I already have death and darkness expansion, I’m having so much fun playing it with my electronic drum kit (td50) and also to creating presets. These days I’ve been looking for something drier and warmer sounding to play some soul, r&b, funky etc. So I’d like some advice from those who own these two expansions to see which one would be the most suitable for me and/or the one with I can get out more sounds. Thanks!
They both have some great dry sounds if that’s what you’re after but the winner for me would be Hansa especially the vocal booth kit. So warm and dry it makes you want to curl up and have a nap in the kick drum.
Hansa does not compare to Decades when it comes to soul, funk, and rhythm & blues. Decades has both the sound and ambiance, mainly due to the fact that you have both the engineer and the studio of many of the top records of those genres. Hansa is great for more 80s style pop and rock.

I would be remiss if I neglected to mention two other SDX packs that are equally suitable for these genres.
Indiependent, while not dry, has a very tight ambiance reminiscent of some old school type R&B as well as soul. It also contains some vintage kit pieces that would be more indicative of that era ( my personal faves are the pieces with calf skin heads). Considering that this SDX has been made available on a black Friday deal of $50, it would almost be foolish to pass up.
Another SDX perfect for these genres, is Custom & Vintage. The dry ambiance in combination with the vintage board used to record the kit pieces, make it ideal for more contemporary funk, soul and R&B. I wouldn’t let the age of this SDX, nor the fact that it has fewer articulations than many of today’s SDX packs, fool you. This SDX has the right kit pieces articulations for those genres. Considering that it is at 40% off the regular price, it wouldn’t be a bad SDX to have.

I mentioned these two expansions due to the complexity of the articulations (especially for hi hat), even if the discounted expansions are very cool I wanted something new generation.
Those genres aren’t about complexities. Fact it’s quite the opposite.

My 2 cents
Modern Dry sound ( Al La Tame Impala , War on drugs ) = Hansa
Vintage Dry sound ( 70s singer songwriter, Classic Soul ) = Decades
The poster is a drummer like myself using edrums to record. The newer sdx packs are far better to play from edrums. I have a lot of old sdx packs from when I had sd2 but I don’t use them as I can’t get the same amount of feel from them. Remember those styles were actually played on real drums and the drummer had the full articulations of real drums at hand.
Having the articulations really makes a difference if playing in from an ekit.
so I have Hansa which has a greater range of sounds with octobahns and Roto toms. I haven’t played Decades but most edrummers love it as it plays great.
SD3 with older sdx,s plus Rooms of Hansa and Death & Darkness. Cubase and wavelab current versions. Roland TD50x using all trigger inputs for triggering SD3 only. Windows 11 computer. Various keyboards and outboard gear as well as VST instruments. Acoustic drums: Yamaha 9000 natural wood and Pearl masters. Various snare drums. RME BabyFace Pro FS and Adam A7X monitors
I use Decades daily on eDrums myself. Though not as “beefy” as Hansa they feel probably the most realistic as a player. Plus the Variety of that SDX is probably the highest. A real sleeper in that pack is the “Pearl” kit. bombastic but not over the top. Kind of like much of the slate stuff but much more usable from a player perspective.
Do all the articulations work with some of the older TD kits such as at TD15? Is there an added feature in the newer TD kits that provides more articulations or are they all about the same? I always thought the added features is the newer kits was more to improve the built in Roland TD sounds?
Have a read up on what the drum modules support via midi. Also depends on the cymbals but right down to the cy8 are two zones and rides are 3 zones. That was the same on my old td20 and is the same on my td30. The newest td27 and td50 can use the digital snare and ride which adds a bit more.

Im not the best drummer in the world, I just enjoy drumming and doing my own thing.
But I have quite a lot of videos now using Death and Darkness, Legacy of Rock and the latest five use Hansa because I wanted a dryer sound.
Note: most are recorded, mixed and bounced from Logic and may have some mastering added.

added more tests using Decades on the above link. Nice dry kit and a towel snare for some Beatles tunes 😉
Funny how am I new found dilemma of the SDX value pack has now caught me playing Night of the Living Threads as I am now presented with the same dilemma. I am trying to decide whether I want Decades or Hansa and I am starting to lean more towards Hansa only because of my music style. I care more about the drum production themselves than actual rooms. I’m finding myself listening to hours of demo audio on Toontrack’s site. Choices… choices.’
