DEATH & DARKNESS VS METAL MANIA

Hi Toontrack team!
I have a quick question. I’m using Metal Mania a lot in Superior Drummer to play behind my kit and to export track by track.
But I’m considering buying Death & Darkness because everyone seems to praise it.However, I’m wondering: since the SDX is relatively old, is it still up to date in terms of nuance, sound quality, and velocity compared to Metal Mania? (Even though Metal Mania is an EZX.)
I’d be really happy to get an answer from you.

Age of D&D has nothing to do with anything. There’s something to be said for older stuff if it fills the bill for what you want to do. All SDX’s are quite good with sound quality and comparing one to another that way all comes down to where each was recorded, what equipment was used, the drummer and the person(s) behind the board. It’s what fits the tune.

I’ve been using D&D for quite the while and it’s good for stuff beyond metal. There’s quite the spread of sound between the 2 sections with (to me) Death being the most metal oriented. I’ve also used it on straight rock, prog rock and most everything else except for pop rock. Heck I’ve even used a Darkness kit for a Charlie Brown Christmas tune. If you want an SDX that hits hard for metal I’d suggest looking at the Area 33 SDX. That can hit like a ton of sledgehammers.

It is still an SDX that was released for sd3 and not sd2 so is a modern one. I use it a lot for rock music and other types of music as well, as I love the toms in darkness. The quality of sdx’s in my opinion offer more and are better quality. They also look good in sd3.

SD3 with older sdx,s plus Rooms of Hansa and Death & Darkness. Cubase and wavelab current versions. Roland TD50x using all trigger inputs for triggering SD3 only. Windows 11 computer. Various keyboards and outboard gear as well as VST instruments. Acoustic drums: Yamaha 9000 natural wood and Pearl masters. Various snare drums. RME BabyFace Pro FS and Adam A7X monitors

As Jack said, age doesn’t matter. I just used D&D in a recent mix for a client and it fit perfectly. If it fits what you need, get it

Personally, I like the room dynamics of the Darkness kits in the pool for edrumming with headphones. And  as Jack mentioned, the kits are fairly versatile in both rooms, and the mic setups allow for a lot of variety.  I’ve used both rooms for rock, prog rock, jazz (the Death rides are worth a try).  I like the double kick setup in Death (I have two kick towers, and not many SDXs have two kicks), however they are a bit dampened for non-metal and need some work to bring them out more.
