Hi,
Situation: i record SD3 as an instrument in cubase 9. When i playback, everything is fine. Every mapping and every articulation works as recorded before.
Now i drag the recorded sd3 midi to the midi track in SD3 to be able to use the great grid editor there. Playback is in sync, but now different toms, cymbals and hihat articulations where played. I tried the different options on import, but never got that, what is played from the midi track in the daw directly. When i correct these wrong instruments in SD 3 (change midi notes and hihat triggers) and export it back to Cubase, now again a lot things changes.
My questions: What is the right way to transfer with SD3 recorded midi tracks from a DAW to SD3 and keep the articulations as they were recorded?
TIA
Thomas
Do you use the latest version of Superior Drummer 3 (3.0.3)?
If you use that, when you import or drag a MIDI file to the song track, a popup will ask if you want to apply the MIDI In preset that is enabled. You should have that option checked.
Another way to get MIDI from a DAW to Superior Drummer 3 is to record enable Superior Drummer 3 (the red dot button below the song track) and then play the MIDI from the host. Now the MIDI will be recorded into the song track of Superior and the notes will play the same instruments.

Thanks for your answer Henrik!
Yes, i use the latest version 3.03
Of course have tried the mentioned option to apply the preset before posting my question here, the result is even more worst, than leaving it unchecked. Especially the hihat articulations are wrong. The notes in the grid editor were now moved to the trigger section underneath the hihat track and sound as the hihat is played half or full open. But that is not the case, when played back from the DAW the Hihat sounds closed. So the aftertouch data seems to be misinterpreted during import
I know the other way your described, but that’s unfortunately no option for me, because of my production workflow.
Can you describe (or point me to a document) what the import option should do with the midi notes and aftertouch data from the source?
I thought when i record SD3 in my DAW the midi and aftertouch data isn’t manipulated in any way, everything happens when SD receives the data. Now mapping and interpretation of aftertouch is used based on my settings in SD3. If this is correct, then during import the same raw midi data is given to SD3 and the import option applies the same transformation to the Hihat as normally happens during playback!?
Thanks in advance
Thomas
It would really help if you could make a copy of your Cubase project where you strip away all instruments but the Superior Drummer 3 track. Leave the MIDI on the Cubase track, zip that project and post it here. It’s hard to guess what’s going on without testing it!

Hi, so it seems like the follow host function is not working for me. in S3. wheni add a note in the daw, it is not adding the note in the grid editor,.
I need this to work because i would like to have a quick way ot changing the grid to triplets, so if have pro tools in triplet grid while the S3 grid is in non-triplets, it could be easy to edit different patterns on the fly. Or some shorcut would be nice. This shortcut has been aded into pro tools, but now the pro tools midi grid editor is inferior to the S3 only in the department of because of sub-menu row articulations. So if i could at least switch to triplets in the S3 fgrid editor it would be less of a hassle.
But at the end of the day i still think this S3 grid editor needs major work and is still not usable. Firstly they should color code the drum hits per row in my opinion.
But in general This thing is so hard to get used to. The grid lines are not intuitive like lighter sub division lines and each beat isnt more contrast of a line. If you look at the pro tools midi grid its proper contrasts on the grid. there is only a brighter contrast line at the end of the measure. This thing is just not usable. There should be some background shades assisting with this. This is not a great editor sadly.
The other thing is that any hit penciled in on the grid is at max velocity ant thats very annoying to work with. Is there a way to set the pencil note velocity to a low default velocity? because honestly i am nbot trying to carpet bomb drums and drums are not to forward in this astral ambient black metal stuff im trying to get going here. drums are not to be as forward in this type of music. But i just can’t seem to get a smooth workflow happening here.
Also there is no metronome here. I can’t use this grid.
I am also trying to drag midi clips from my daw clip list into the clip player/grid editor and i can’t do that. The only way is the import midi function in which case you have to see which clips are what in the pro tools midi clips folder. There is not much i am able to do here at all.
I hit record in SD3 and play MIDI drum track from host.
Nothing records in the grid editor.?

I don’t think that will work. In Cubase (any version) you would have to route the midi into sd3. Just playing a midi in Cubase doesn’t do that. If the track you are playing midi from is a vsti and has midi out capability then it would be possible. I just record all my midi in Cubase and use Cubase drum maps. Very simple and Cubase drum editor is very powerful. Make sure you are not changing note numbers on sd3 main page. Always use the edrum page to do this.

Hi,
Pro Tools user here. Which exact PT version are you using? How is your SD3 track set up? If you play back MIDI from the Pro Tools Timeline and that MIDI triggers the SD3 plug-in, it should get recorded when you hit rec before you play back the PT Timeline.
