Hello,
I use SD3 with several SDX expansions. I‘m setting up a new Computer (Mac Os) for a Live project for which I need just a selection of the libraries content, basically just two custom drum kits.
Is there a way to get rid off all the other soundfiles I don‘t need?
Is there some documentation about the content of the obw-files?
Would SD3 still work if sounds are missing?
Thank you!
christian
There’s no documentation that will give you what you want. Those 2 custom kits – are they from just one library/SDX or spread across different ones? If just from one library/SDX then you only need to have that library/SDX on your system. This live project – are you talking about the daw Ableton Live or for live playing? This new Mac – is it a second computer or what? If a second computer where are your SDX’s stored on your first/other computer? If they’re on an external drive you could just move that drive to the other computer assuming both machines have the needed connections.

Hi,
the libraries that can be installed in parts, e.g. the Core Library, Death & Darkness, Orchestral, etc should be installed that way. They are divided into library or microphone/bleed parts and shouldn’t be manually edited. You can not choose to remove specific instruments, like e.g. Snares you tend not to use.
Having said that, I have posted earlier about removing the already installed Surround and Extra Bleed parts from the Core Library here:

It is indeed for a live project in Ableton Live.
I would need 2 kits from SD3, Decades and some Percussion on a new second computer. My main computer holds all my SD3 libraries (aprox. 500 GB), but the kits I wanna use live is only about 10-20 GB. I don‘t wanna buy a Mac with a huge SSD, because I will just use it for this live thing.
I know the procedure with the custom install for SD3 core library and I already got rid of all the Surround and high surround files.
But I did hope I could further reduce the installation size to make this work on a 256GB SSD. Too bad…

I would go with a bigger internal drive. You never know when you’ll want or need that extra space. You can never have too much money or too much drive space. I have a 2 TB ssd for my samples that’s three quarters full. Never thought I’d get that much on there and now wish I’d gotten a 4TB ssd. My drives are internal to my Mac Pro desktop. Luckily I can change the drives myself – can’t do that on a new Mac laptop and that’s the thing with them. Either way you go do pay attention and not just for drive space but also ram.
Your existing computer – laptop or desktop? If a laptop I’d use that instead of splashing on a new machine unless you think your new endeavour is going to be long term.

Hi Jack,
thanks again.
Yes, a bigger internal drive would be great but for Mac it is also insanely expensive. And how many drums can you play live? So, why should I carry around tons of sounds, when I just need some of them? For studio work I would totally agree with you, but for this one specific live situation I really don’t need that much.
I did some research now – try and error – moved some obw-files around. So, for the “Decades”-Expansion you could use a similar custom installation like for the core library. For anyone interested:
There are 64 obw-files
if you remove any of the first 17 files, SD3 informs you (under Settings/Libraries/Paths): No installation info
If you have installed
soundb1.obw – soundb17.obw it says: Partial Installation – Basic Setup
soundb1.obw – soundb33.obw it says: Partial Installation – Full Stereo and 5.0 Setup
soundb1.obw – soundb49.obw it says: Partial Installation – Height Surround Setup
soundb1.obw – soundb64.obw it says: Full Installation – Full Bleed Setup
Like for the Core Library I just removed parts 34-49. It still says Full Stereo and 5.0 Setup but I could use and adjust all the Bleed-Sounds.
That’s not what I wanted, but at least some improvement.
I submit you’re dancing on a dangerous edge omitting various obw files. You didn’t answer questions I asked and that is what is your main computer? Laptop? If so then why not just use that for this new project? And is this a long-term project that would really need a second computer? I can see why you’d want to leave your main machine at home but if there’s no long-term possibility then why spend the money for a new computer?

Alright, I understand your questions, but the decision to use a new computer for this is final.
It‘s a live project where the computer is hidden and built in in a keyboard set up, it will be a Mac mini (the new one is small enough). I don‘t use my main Computer, which is a MacBook Pro with a 4Tb internal SSD (you‘re right about ‚you can never have too much space‘), because it’s too big and I need it for other things happening at the same time.
This whole setup is an idea I worked a long time on and it’s getting to a more final state now.
Thank you for your input though!
regards
christian
You don’t need a large internal drive. One terabyte should be sufficient as far as an internal drive goes on a Mac. Anything more is overkill. Get yourself an external 2 or 4TB SSD that hooks up to the USB-C port. That will be sufficient in storing your Superior Drummer libraries. As Superior Drummer loads all of its drum kits into RAM, rather than stream the data in real time, a USB-C drive is sufficient as far as loading times (I get excellent loading times out of mine).
Crucial drives are a bargain this time of year.
As far as a Mac goes, you should primarily focus on CPU and RAM seeing as those are pretty much constants.
