I am thinking of expanding my e-drum kit (Roland 17KV) with a Roland SPD Octapad, to get more pads to play with.
Any help is appreciated, as I want to be sure about the set-up before buying things.

You can only have one kit active at a time in SD3. So both Roland pieces would work at the same time to that one kit. The hardest part is working out the pad assignments such that hits aren’t duplicated between the two and what hits activate which kit pieces in SD3. This means you’re going to have to do some extensive MIDI mapping in either SD3 or the Rolands.
ARe you going to use SD3 standalone or in a daw? If the latter then you’re going to have to see how the daw handles multiple MIDI devices on a single virtual instrument like SD3.

I will use it both as a standalone (most of the time) and in Reason sometimes for recording.
Maybe a stupid question: If I use my e-drum kit, I use all but 4 instruments/”slots” in Superior Drummer. So 4 more pads only? So if I connect the Octapad, I can only use half of the pads? Or is it possible to expand the kits in Superior Drummer? It seems like the Orchestral SDX have a lot more to play at the same time, but that I can just guess from image on Toontrack.com
You might be able to achieve the original objective if your e-kit modules support setting the midi channel value. I have successfully done what you are asking by setting one e-kit module to produce midi with channel 10 and the other channel 11. Then in my DAW I created two SD3 tracks with midi channel filters to route the midi notes accordingly based on channel value. You can then setup two independent SD3 kits that should work at the same time, each being driven from a separate e-kit module.
You might be able to do the same with two instances of standalone SD3 as it has a midi channel filter as well, but I’ve not tried to do this.

Can’t do two instances of SD3 in standalone, at least on a Mac. Doesn’t matter that you can set the MIDI channel to one of your choice. So it’s in a daw. Period.

Thanks for your answer! Sounds promising. Now I know it works, and when I pull the trigger I will try your solution. If I need to open my DAW (Reason) even for practicing, that isn’t a big problem, as I need the computer anyway.

What are these 4 instrument slots you’re talking about? If you’re talking about ‘add an instrument’ I just tried and I could load in 8 ‘instruments’ of varying percussions, etc. And this is on top of a kit in the Death library that has 2 kicks, 3 rack toms, 2 floor toms and a full complement of cymbals.

Just because it’s another SDX doesn’t necessarily mean it’s another instance of SD3. If you run in your daw then you could have it on one instance and a second instance of SD3 to host whatever other kit you want. Again – in standalone you can only have one instance of SD3 at a time.

Thanks! That was exactly what I was after. I did not realize I could just add instruments like that, thought I needed to replace the toms, cymbals etc, that what I can see in the kit is the given number.

Hi Jack – I’d never tried this but read it was possible. This thread get me interested so I checked it out. On a Mac from the terminal, you can use the command “open -n” to start a second instance of an app. Like this for SD3 (where one standalone is already running):
open -n /Applications/Toontrack/Superior\ Drummer\ 3.app
Just tried it, and it started a second standalone SD3. When the second started, it warned about the prev session not shutting down correctly (indicating there might be only a single session log and hinting at possible corruption so YMMV), but I just hit cancel and all seemed fine. I even set them up with different MIDI channels and tested the mixed kit routing, and it worked.

You really don’t want to do what you’re trying especially in Terminal as it’s sketchy at best. You really should do it in your daw. Screw up in Terminal and you could brick your computer. Not worth it.
