Classic Compressor in SD3?

I can say it’s not an 1176/670 compressor as SD3 has emulations of those. The only other ‘classic’ comp I can think of is an LA2A/LA3A but the controls are wrong for that. Nor an SSL bus comp either. API2500 maybe?

I don’t think it is modeled after any hardware. My guess is that this is one of ToonTrack’s own design and was most likely carried over from Superior Drummer 2. ToonTrack would be able to shed better light on this particular effect.

My guess is that’s its loosely based on an 1176 and was used in S2. When S3 was released they included the Comp 76 which was more closely modeled.

But they’re were many presets for S2 era releases of SDXs that used the original Classic Compressor they couldn’t replace it so there is both. Just my guess though.

Very loosely based on an 1176 as I’ve never seen one that topped out at under 5:1

Yeah, and an LA2A in limit mode was much higher than 5:1 plus no attack and release settings. Which I think is why it’s loosely based on the classics.

I don’t hear any of the familiar sonic characteristics of the known classics. Perhaps Olof can elaborate on this particular effect.

Thanks for the thoughtful replies, all.  Perhaps this Olof (one of the devs?) can help out of they see this, otherwise I have a couple of leads at least.

I think we are the leads…

Olof frequents these forums, so I am sure that he is bound to see it. We will just have to be patient for a response, considering that he and everyone else in ToonTrack ore probably doubling down for the upcoming EZMix 3 product release next Tuesday.

Jord called it, what I’ve heard from the respondents in this thread are indeed my leads thus far. If I should think of or hear anything more I’ll be sure to update.

    It’s based on a Distressor.

Thanks. What is interesting is that the ratio caps at under 5:1 when a real Distressor goes up to 20:1 and something Dave Derr calls ‘nuke’ which I think is limiting or an emulation of ‘all buttons in’ of an 1176.

I’m sure we could find a lot of differences between the CC and the Distressor, but it doesn’t really matter since it is still a great compressor. I’ve used it for many drum mixes. Considering that you primarily mix within your DAW, you probably have a Distressor plug-in on hand, if you felt the need to use one in a drum mix.

I have to admit I wouldn’t have guessed it’s based on a Distressor, so it would be stretching a bit to assume that’s why I liked it in the first place.

I do have the UAD plugin and use it often, would be interesting to see how its modes/ratios were translated to the SD3 plug. (I frankly prefer to think of them more as modes given the high variability and program-dependency beyond the bounds of a ratio.)

An interesting surprise in any case, thanks Olof and everyone.

The SD3 Classic Compressor is also available with all its controls in EZmix 3: the preset “Compressor Type 1.”
