There is no dedicated “choke” for instruments other than cymbals, but you could try and experiment with the “Smoothing” and “Envelope” settings in the sidebar to get what you’re after.

You can build this with audioFX using a capable DAW (…or I can build it for you if you have no idea about midi-controlling audioFX…). 🙂

This can be easily done with a macro tied to the envelope. Adjust your envelope’s decay and release  values to your choked sound and apply the values to the macro knob with fully open values at the other end. If you are using Logic, you can bind the macro to a smart control and automate it in the arrange window.

Thank you guys for all the responses. Musta just been a slow day when I first posted!

In addition, for anyone else who stumbles on this in the future: you can enable the envelope, set the release, then set the release trigger to note off. Now the length of the midi note will choke the sound if short enough. Not as a great a solution as just being able to assign any sound to a choke group, but certainly the most straightforward option.

    Thanks again,

you can enable the envelope, set the release, then set the release trigger to note off.

There are some possibilites: e.g. you can have a different noteON event stop the roll.

Can the original request be added to SD3 please?
The closed roll for a snare seems to ignore other snare hits, a mute group or editable mute group would be great, otherwise it’s pretty much unusable unless you’re just demoing drum rolls or something. Rolls are also really hard to get right with individual hits.

    Hi Hamiro89,

did you see the advice above about Enabling the Envelope and setting the Release to Note Off? If not, please try it out and adjust the Release Time to taste. It will IOW sound until you release the key/the length of the MIDI note.

    BR,
    John
