    Hi,

I would simply load the Sneap Kit, select the Kick, then go to the Preset Menu and Alt-Click the Bob Rock 1 Preset to bring up the Load Parts window.

Then check ‘only selected instruments’ and ‘only selected channels’, then click ‘Load Parts’.

    Unless I misunderstand?

I tried that and I’m still getting Andy’s BD settings. This is actually a great example to try this with, because these BD’s have so much FX and stuff on them, where you can clearly tell the difference.

Try this go to Bob Rock Kit 1 and listen to the BD. Then load Andy’s Kit 1 and hear the difference. Then try your method above and let me know what’s not getting copied over. Clearly there’s a ton of reverb on Andy’s BD, but I think there’s a lot more difference.

Well, there are several things that you need to take into consideration between the Presets, e.g.

    • the Kick in BRK 1 is routed to Bus 1 where there is extra processing apart from on the Kick Fader
    • there is another bus feed from that Kick Bus to a parallel compression bus
    • when you Import the BRK 1 Kick to the Andy Sneap 1 kit, the Kick routing makes it go directly into the Reverb, so you need to change the fader output to Out 1/2 instead.
    • the bleeds are very differently set up

I saved the Kick Bus, the Comp Bus and the Master Out as Channel Effects User Presets, which I recalled to empty buses in the Andy Sneap Preset after I had imported the BRK 1 Kick and it made it sound more like in the BRK 1 Preset. You have to set the routing correctly, of course.

Pretty amazing stuff. I tried it and ran into a snag finding an open bus in Andy’s kit. All the busses are named except the last one on the far right. I assume that’s the open one. So I assume i need to add some extra busses in order to have room for the 3 busses i saved in BRK 1 Channel Effects User Presets.

Also when I added the BRK 1 BD using the Parts Presets like you outlined, it does show up as fader 1 like you said. So do I only need to click on the word Reverb at the bottom of the fader and then choose out 1/2 in the list?

    Sorry,

I can see that it’s not obvious if you haven’t worked with busses in SD3 before. The mixer auto-hides unused busses and outputs.

In the mixer window, you can click the ‘Edit Visibility’ Show All Channels button, which shows the auto-hidden channels.

Also, if you would route the Kick to an unused bus (clicking the word Reverb, yes), then that bus becomes visible in the mixer.

This also works if you add a Send on a channel; select an unused bus and it becomes visible.

All channels can be renamed by double-clicking their name, e.g. Bus 1 or Output 1/2.

Thanks for your patience, I just upgraded from S2 to S3, so I’m still learning. I got it all put together like you said and the end result is very close but it sounds like there’s some reverb on the BD, yet when I mute the reverb bus it doesn’t change it. I’m wondering if I just did something wrong or if you noticed the same.

When 1st load Andy Kit 1. I then selected the BD and selected BRK1 holding the ALt key and made the selections like you said. Then I imported the 3 channel Effects user presets you told me to save (Kick, Comp, Master) and then routed channel 1, ,2, 3 (Kick in, Kick out, Kick sub) to Kick bus.

I then changed the outputs of Kick, Comp, Master to out 1/2 and added a send in Kick bus to Comp bus. Does that all sound right? If so do you know why we’re getting similar to a slight reverb sound on the Kick?

Hey John I appreciate all your attention on this question. I’m wondering what you think about my last question that you haven’t answered. Do you think the difference I’m hearing is from the overhead mics? If so should I copy that bus over too? Also I outlined in detail the steps I took to do this. Did I do it right?
When I installed I didn’t install the “extra bleed” or the surround mics, because my SSD is pretty full. I’ve contemplated installing the extra bleed just to see if that’s pretty noticeable.

    Hi,

in the BRK 1, the Kick has Bleed turned on for the Snare Bottom, Front Height and Rear Height microphones.

If I Show All Channels, the Front and Rear are added when I import the BRK 1 Kick, even though they are not active in the Andy Sneap Preset, which has bleed from the Kick.

Since you write you do not have the Surround parts installed, I can only imagine it is the Kick Bleed through the Snare that in turn is sent to a Reverb you hear.

I figured it out. When we imported the BRK1 BD using the parts presets, even though we checked the channel box, it doesn’t import the mixer settings for chan 1,2,+3, which are the Kick In, Kick, out and Kick sub. I went ahead and saved each one of those channels as Channel Effects User Presets. once I imported those in, I got it to sound exactly like BRK1 BD, without messing with any bleed or Front Height or Rear height mic busses

I love Part Presets where I can keep the same mixer settings and just put a different kit in there. One thing I’ve found out by studying the presets is the mixer settings have a lot to do with how something sounds.
So is it possible to open Andy Sneap Kit 1 and to replace the BD with Bob Rock kit 1 BD with all it’s FX, tweaks, mixer settings, etc. I know I can do that with the part Presets but it would be Andy’s BD settings.

    Good one, thx!
