I just picked up the CustomShop EZX and want to finger drum my own parts using the brushes kit. (Thinking folk style, not complex jazz.) There are some articulations I’m not familiar with. What is a “ruff” and a “forward/backward brushTrig”? Also any tips on finger drummer this kind of thing are welcome!
A ruff is two soft hits followed by a harder. Trig is short for trigger and to do with E-kits. Forward/backward is, I believe, which way you slide a brush.
TBH it is more important to know what they sound like more than what they are and the best way to discover that is to go into the Grid Editor, and expand the snare to see all the available articulations for brushes. You will notice when you do that, ruffs are not available for brushes. They are more to do with a bouncing stick action on the snare and brushes, don’t really bounce.
From many years experience programming drums I would highly recommend that you get a pad controller. This will enable you to map it according to your fingers in order to do a more realistic groove. I would also suggest that if you are going to do it this way listen to as many drummers as you can and analyze what they’re doing.
