    Hi,

is there a possibility to drive SD3 with the Live-Track in Pro Tools without Import the AudioFile in  the Plugin?

    Thx

    lg

Yes – just like any other virtual instrument. I keep my MIDI in PT and feed that to SD3. I then send the audio from SD3 back into PT tracks. I have a track preset in PT that with one motion has SD3 on an instrument track with separate tracks to receive the audio from SD3. I use multi-channel output in SD3 with individual tracks in PT for snares, toms, cymbals, overheads and ambience channels and those all get routed to a single bus in PT. All my drum mixing is done in PT just like using a real physical drum kit. My PT preset has about 20 tracks all told.

    Thx for the fast Answer.

For me to unterstand for Example:

PT-Audio Channel1    to    SD3 (Midi Instrument Channel 1)     to     PT – Audio Channel 11 (for Mix)
PT-Audio Channel2    to    SD3 (Midi Instrument Channel 1)     to     PT – Audio Channel 12 (for Mix)
PT-Audio Channel3    to    SD3 (Midi Instrument Channel 1)     to     PT – Audio Channel 13 (for Mix)

That means that SD3 convert the Audiosignals in Midi (internal) and trigger the right Audiofile what i wish for. Then the SD3 link the Audiosignal by Multichannel Output too PT Audio Channel?

    Thats correct.

There are several ways to achieve this.  I too use PT to edit and create the midi notes. THe SD3 grid editor is pretty cool but its harder for me to not have those midi notes in the same edit environment as all the other midi instruments.

I usually allow SD3 to be the default stereo output , from within the plug in, until its time to mix. Drumjack52 is using a PT track pre-set to quickly set up a multi bused SD3 structure. These “Track pre sets” in PT are awesome. Such a good way to save time and always get the correct routing and assigments. Im amazed at how often people dont utilize them.

I watch PT engineers tediously repeat the same bussing and routing by hand. ITs crazy. If you spend a couple hours learning how they work, how to set them up and when to implement them… you will be way more efficient and get more time being creative instead of endless mousing and clicking.  Ive saved so much time learning the track pre sets in PT. Especially with routing 20 tracks from SD3 into a daw with all the stereo tracks stereo and all the mono tracks getting the correct panning.

I do , however recommend waiting till the mix stage to break out all the channels from SD3. Unless there is some specific creative or sonic need to do so. Mostly because I often will change the drum kit, or other SD3 particulars before the song is completed. When you change the drum kit is SD3 all the channel assignments can change and create mayhem.

All good except for one thing – if you select ‘keep output routing on preset change’ you can change presets and still keep your routing. I prefer having things done in PT from the start with regards the audio routing. I have PT track presets for the stock SD3 library, another for Death and a third for Darkness. It really pays to learn how to do presets.

    Big thx for the Infos.
I am not sooo good in English but i think i understand. Has anyone any Videos to link it how approach this in detail?

What i need is to send the audio file “live” to the SD3. Its not for the Endmix only for Overhear. I make the recording and will send the Audiofiles Live without Import the Files in SD3. I can quickly show something to the customer or in the Editing i can check how it sound about. When the Editing is over I Import the Files in SD3 to have the Midi Information.

You do NOT send the audio file to SD3. You treat it like any other virtual instrument. Send it the MIDI from ProTools to SD3 then route the audio from SD3 to a PT audio track. There should be plenty of videos on YouTube on how to use virtual instruments.
