Hi guys,
Just recently downloaded latest SD3 upgrades, and have noticed I’m now getting red error message at bottom of pane saying “Audio engine inactive, check your audio device” when changing drum voices e.g. changing from a Ludwig Coliseum to Tama Brass? I’ve not had this issue before, and whilst the message is coming up, all samples loaded are working fine?
Any suggestions as to why this is suddenly happening would be cool!
Thanks
Dave

This appeared after some of the update back then, before that the SD3 worked perfectly. Now it gives that error and stops playback when changing kits or instruments while a groove is playing. Restarting playback works, but it’s still annoying. It’s like the update made some error threshold tighter, now the SD3 panics when it doesn’t have a sound to trigger and plays dead. It used to work better.
We have made a fix for some bugs regarding the audio device error. It will be added in the the next version of SD3, which currently is being tested and will be released asap.

Thanked by: Donald Seyler and zfisherdrumsHenrik – this is very encouraging to hear. Thank you.
I currently work in Software Testing. I only mention it because reproducing issues is really important for restoring confidence to my customers. Unfortunately, I was not able to repro the issue nor narrow down any potential root causes. Even went crawling through Windows Event Viewer and Device Manager settings; nothing that concretely said “here’s the bug!”. When I receive a fix without that repro in hand, I’m always concerned if the issue is really fixed, or just hiding somewhere waiting to pop out during another live performance like it did last week.
All this to ask if there are any root cause or repro steps you could share that might help bring closure to this open loop? I know you probably walk the fine-line between serving customers and protecting company IP/reputation. I get it. Just any additional info would go a long way for nervous skeptics like me, at least.
Regardless, thank you for all your help. Looking forward to the next release and Orchestral Percussion SDX as well.

What’s your Audio Interface, and what drivers are you using? If you aren’t using ASIO drivers, please try that!

It happens to me as well, it happens when using my roland module to trigger the SD3 sounds but then later when I want to use SD3 without the roland module just to check something I get the message “audio device inactive” after that I have to reselect the audio device in my mac and restart SD3 standalone because none of the menu buttons work, it seems SD3 don’t automatically switch the audio device and wants to use the latest device used, in my case the roland td-50 module.
I’ve seen for the first time yesterday. It happens after I closed my MacBook and it when to sleep. After waking up I got the message. No sound. Restart Mac and problem when away. Only time I’ve seen this.

This is an CoreAudio issue that is OS deep. I get this on a continual basis on my work MBP, which only uses its internal speakers.

Another audio engine problem here. There is no audio coming from SD3 any more – suddenly stopped. SD3 showed the “Audio Engine inactive” message. The visual effects are working (hits on the drums etc.).
When I open a new instance of SD3 in the same Cubase 10 project, the sound is working again. When I load the stored project that I saved in the instance of SD3 that is not working, the audio is missing again – now in the new instance as well.

- SD3 3.1.4
- no external interface

The Audio Engine Inactive is just a visual cue that says that Superior Drummer 3 hasn’t got any place to send the audio to. So it’s something that’s happening in Cubase, or with the drivers to the audio interface (even if you don’t have an external audio interface).
Have you updated, or changed something, since it stopped working?
Does it work in standalone mode?

Thanked by: Donald SeylerMy Audio interfaces that are at my disposal are either “Presonus” ,Studiolive 24 Series III ,Studio 1824C, or Studio 26C all are using Asio drivers with Studio One 4 Pro Software running Windows 10 64 or Windows 7 64 Running in stand alone or in DAW ……..I get same problem so if your answer is (The Audio Engine Inactive is just a visual cue that says that Superior Drummer 3 hasn’t got any place to send the audio to.) How do I fix ? How is this even happening ?I’m trying to setup Roland Td-50 to run Easy Drummer 2 and or SD3 for first time…
I am having the same issue. Just since the last update and only in stands lone mode. Never had the issue before, now it occurs every few minutes.

I just updated SD3 and Reaper and am having this problem too. What’s the fix?
After the latest Sd3 update I’m still having this issue, when changing audio sources the interface shows the error and don’t respond to any clicks until restarted…
this is increasingly frustrating!
Here what I do…
I’m in Cubase 10.5 Pro with a brand new Music PC and brand new UR-RT4 Steinberg interface.
SD3 (3.1.5) works then doesn’t. When it doesn’t I found that if I remove the VST Instrument and re-add it, then it’s good to go.
A pain but so far that’s my work around…
In standalone… it seems to work okay but I don’t use standalone at all.
I have a template that contains SD3 and was made with SD3 working and a selected preset chosen. The template was saved with no errors.
