Is it possible to either assign a unique instrument to a drum pad’s rim only or “not” have the rim trigger at all on a tom with EZD3?
I currently have a Roland BT-1 bar trigger connected to one of my Roland tom pads via a drum splitter (BT-1 as rim). It works great with the Pearl MimicPRO. However, I can’t seem to figure out how to either assign some other instrument to this pad’s rim or completely eliminate the rim trigger inside EZD.
Thanks,
Steve K.
Hi,
it is a ‘yes’ to both questions.
Right-click the Instrument in question and open ‘Edit mapping in E-drums/MIDI In’ To remove a trigger note, just right-click the note field for the articulation in question and select ‘Remove’.
In your example, you would first select the instrument and articulation you wish to trigger.
To assign a note to an articulation not in the current MIDI Preset, you open the Edit Mapping window and either just:
– double-click in the Note field and enter a new value
– click the small menu to the right of the Note/Key fields and select ‘Add Note…’
– select the articulation you wish to assign the note to and then click ‘Learn’ and hit your controller pad/key

Thanked by: EssKayKayThanks John for your quick response.
I tried removing the rim from my racktom #3 as noted. However, there wasn’t a note/key entry for my rim. When I click on the Rim Only I hear the rim click. When I click “learn” to assign the sound to the rim, both the rim and center (head) trigger the same rim click sound. It’s like the pad only has one trigger.
I tried this on my snare which did have a note entry for rim. I was able to assign the rim click to the rim and head sound accordingly – all worked fine. As a test, I swapped cables between my snare and tom pads – the old tom pad now triggered as the snare had. So, apparently it has something to do with my setup, my module (Pearl MimicPRO), or both.
As a further test, I tried changing the EZD module setting to a couple Roland models (TD-15 & TD-30); it reacted the same as the MimicPRO.
A third option I thought about was changing the velocity setting for the rim only. However, apparently this is only assignable to the pad has a whole (i.e., not head & rim independently).
For now John, I’m going to put this all on hold; I may revisit this in the future.
Again, thanks – much appreciated.

Hi there, I’m interested in this topic as well.
I want to change the sound for the “rim only” on the toms into a sample I created with a DAW. In fact EZdrummer reacts as described – Both center and rim seem to have learned the same. I am not able to give the center trigger the tom sound and the rim a sample.
Is there any way to to this i Do not know?
Thanx for your help,
Ingo
