    You have to have the key-switch event happen before the note you want it to affect. It can happen in the middle of the previous note without affecting that note.

    MIDI events do not last through what we think is the duration of a note. A MIDI note is an “on” event later followed by an “off” event, of which, gives you the duration of the note. (to put it very simply). So, a key-switch cannot affect a change in the middle a note. So, make sure you key-switch starts before the note starts.
