Hi,
I got the Metal Machine pack because I wanted multiple China cymbals (among other things). My question has to do with midi files that are done on smaller kits, such as the standard EZD kit or other MIDI loops.
If I choose the MM kit, it will use that kit regardless of the groove file because it just pulls the MIDI info, right? So, what happens to the extra drums and cymbals, they’re just not used? Can I switch out a ride for a china by changing the mapping, or would I have to edit the MIDI info, adding and deleting?
I’m trying to learn this stuff, it sure is a lot different than my old Alesis HR-16! I appreciate any tips or help that can be thrown my way. I’m still making my way through the forums.
Thanks,
Todd
If I understand you correctly, just move MIDI notes in your DAW’s sequencer, change an event from one note number to another.
The MIDI grooves tend to be consistent for “Ride Cymbal1”, “Ride Cymbal2”, “CrashCymbal1”, “Crash Cymbal2”, etc. What actual cymbals are used then depends on the EZX. MM will, due to its genre tend to have more cymbals, so the MIDI may not cover more than the lower numbers and you will have to edit and modifiy the grooves in your MIDI Editor/Sequencer -but you do that anyway don’t you?
Press the “?” button and look at/print the MIDI mappings. Compare them with the mappings for the EZX pack you get your MIDI from, or look at the MIDI notes used in your editor.
Do you use a DAW where you can name the drum notes? -there are lists for most EZXs ready-made on the web for you to import into your editor.

This is my first real foray into digital recording other than messing around with Cakewalk a bit many years ago. So whatever was in my head regarding MIDI is pretty rusty. I was going to start with GarageBand since it came free with the Mac I purchased a few months ago, but as I read and research, I think I’m going to go with Reaper. So I’m not currently doing anything, LOL! I assume that Reaper will easily do what you are referring to.
I had just noticed that MM had 5 cymbal positions, where many packs have 3 or 4, and wanted to clarify how to modify things to my liking. I understand what you are saying. Thanks for the help!
Todd
I use REAPER too, although I don’t have MM.
I think most MIDI packs will cover a basic drum and cymbal set, MM may use more, but it is very easy to add, move or transpose hits from one instrument to another. I usually delete quite a few hits from any MIDI “grooves” I use, or “split hands” and move the odd hit to a different instrument or articulation (type of hit) for interest or “flavour”.
Quite happy to help with any further questions or problems you have…
