adding instruments with MIDI controller/ silent tracks on mixer

question, 1, i want to add cymbals using my MIDI controller. how do i do this? i always notice 2 empty tracks on the mixer, nothing comes out of them, how do i get cymbals (or anything else) on to them. i record the cymbals but everything else gets muted. i just screwed up a song big time, my head’s going to explode.
