add midi clip to the grid editor

In order to add midi to the grid editor do you have to start by selecting a groove and editing it or is there a way to start without doing so?

Use the draw tool to add a blank block to the timeline and then double click it to edit it.

Yeah, you need a groove to edit. The easiest way is to right click on an empty area on the song track, select Add Empty Block, and the double click it.
