I am trying to create a dry funk drum sound with the Hitmaker SDX. I basically want the kit to only use the overhead mic for the hihats. Unfortunately there is a lot of hiss when boosting the volume on the overhead. I tried this with other SDXs as well, all of them have a lot amount of hiss on the overhead’s hihat. Is there any option to avoid this?
Hi,
I would say this mostly depends on exactly how you are boosting the OH volume and which preset you are using?
Are you turning up the OH Fader in the mixer? Are you using any plug-ins on the OH Fader? Have you raised the HH volume in the OH channel and turned the other instruments down? Have you turned the HH Instrument level up (Level Property Box) on the DRUMS page?

I have muted bleed from all other instruments but the hihat on the overhead mic and am then boosting the whole channel. I have also tried any other method (boosting the hihat’s main channel on the SD3 mixer, to get the overhead’s level louder) but all of them will have a huge amount of hiss. It seems like the hiss is built into the samples, but it is so loud, that you can not use the overhead mic as the main mic (which is very important for that typical dry funk sound). It really is a bummer because the SDX is so good, the amount of detail you can play the hihat is incredible. I attached an example for you.
You may have to be more specific. I’ve been using that SDX and have not detected any noticeable hiss. is there any particular preset you may be using?
