I work in Protools. Use the EZ bassguitars as instrument and different plugins to enhance the sound  But I’m not really satisfied. Who tells me his secret to create a fat realistic EZ bassguitar sound?

    Hi there,

You can pick your method in Pro Tools, after being a steady user for around 18 years, I finally let the license expire. Anyway, the method I have had the best results getting a good bass “track” that can hold the bottom end down is parallel compression.  In PT I did this using 2 tracks, in Studio One I just use a splitter plugin which accomplishes the same thing. Taming the transients on one track. Clamping down on the “second” track then pushing the gain up on it to bring the quieter notes and “character” up. Then combine them, in PT within an aux track, with another compressor (or 2) glueing everything together and possibly side chained with a kick drum to let it through. I haven’t talked about EQ, as that really depends on another bunch of factors, like the mix, arrangement etc. Hopefully this provides a little help.

Thanks Brad, I had to read the way you work a couple of times but I understand now how you do it. Still have to figure out how to sidechain the bass with the kick. Haven’t really done that before. I’m not totally satisfied with the EZ bass samples. I have the Modern, Vintage and the Session, but can’t say I’m blown away. Matter of taste… Again: thank you, it is very helpful!

Are you using just stock Avid plugins? Should be able to sidechain with the stock one.

FWIW I do the same process with Trilian from Spectrasonics or if I play bass through a combo amp or Kemper Modeller.

I have SSL plugins, the bus compressors. And MCDSP ML4000. I can experiment with these ofcourse. The Trilion sounds great, it’s not cheap though. My main issue is with the EZ basses. That’s why I, just like you, use my Jazzbass through some UA software   and work with that track. Regards and Thanks!
