Hi Folks – I was debugging an artifact that kept showing up every 5-10 minutes while playing edrums and I narrowed it down to what seems to be bad behavior for a foot splash. There are actually two issues that I can see: 1) a foot splash was erroneously triggered by SD3 while the pedal was going up (there is a barely perceptible stutter in the CC values) and 2) the splash that was triggered was not choked when the pedal came back down. It is that second one that I think is more concerning to me and is more distracting to hear.
Digging into this problem, I see I have splash sensitivity set to 71% in the midi settings for the hit. I recorded one of these events and looped it while changing the setting, and the only way I got the splash to not be triggered was a detection threshold of 0 or turn the whole thing off. But in the grid editor I see a velocity 127 pedal close event (which the incoming pedal CC data does not corroborate), so SD3 must generate a new close pedal note and add that to the midi. Anyway, my module has its own splash detection with a separate midi note (which was not triggered here) and in the future I’ll just turn off the SD3 splash detection completely. Maybe a note for the dev team that debugging this was a bit of a chore.
Now on to the second issue, once the splash event is triggered, when the pedal CC goes back to 127 (closed in my setup) the splash is not choked out. Is this expected? It does not match reality so I’m just wondering whether I’ve got something amiss in my settings. I can replicate it in real time by a slow hihat close after a splash. The same slow close will choke a tip/edge trigger, but not a foot splash.
I’ve hit this issue before with tip/edge hits and I was pointed to the “Openness Transitions” settings, which I currently have set to “Library Default” as that fixed the issues I was seeing. But I’m wondering if this setting is somehow not affecting the SD3-generated foot splashes. I have attached a screenshot of the grid editor with the foot pedal CC trace and the SD3-generated velocity 127 pedal close (which notice is when the pedal is opening so definitely not a close). When I play this on loop I hear the splash when the pedal close is triggered but the splash is not choked when the pedal closes again as the CC goes back to 127.
I dumped out MIDI from SD3 for the section shown in the image and the MIDI shows the CC “hiccup” when it goes from 110 to 111 to 110, and maybe that was the signal that caused SD3 to generate the splash, but you can clearly see the Note OFF chan 21 but if I listen to this I do not hear the splash choke. (Note channel 21 is pedal closed, and CC 4 is the hi-hat pedal)
Any ideas?
Thanks – Joe
