SD3 has separate articulations for pedal open and pedal closed. And that’s what he’s using here. You don’t use sticks for this. They are completely different than hat open and hat closed where you do use sticks. Hat closed can be used to stop an open hat sound or it can be used as a sound all it’s own without the hihat being opened. From what I can see Guitar Pro only sends note 44 which is hihat pedal closed in SD3 – it doesn’t appear to have a hihat pedal open note. SD3’s hihat pedal open isn’t mapped to any note that I can see.

It looks like you’re going to have to abandon Guitar Pro and do the drum programming in SD3 for what the drummer in the video does. General MIDI drum layout only has a note 44 for hihat pedal without notation on whether that’s pedal open or closed. It’s SD3 that makes that distinction.

Played from an ekit sd3 will do the hi hat splash trick without using a stick.

SD3 with older sdx,s plus Rooms of Hansa and Death & Darkness. Cubase and wavelab current versions. Roland TD50x using all trigger inputs for triggering SD3 only. Windows 11 computer. Various keyboards and outboard gear as well as VST instruments. Acoustic drums: Yamaha 9000 natural wood and Pearl masters. Various snare drums. RME BabyFace Pro FS and Adam A7X monitors

Unfortunately the OP isn’t using an e-kit. He’s manually programming the drums through Guitar Pro and importing that into SD3.

Thanks, I know…I only write my songs in Guitar Pro, then improve the midis in the DAW…for SD, this means that I only have the basic beats in Guitar Pro, but then rework the hihats, velocities, use “my” entire SD3 kit with 4 crashes, 4 chinas etc.

My question was which of SD3’s samples are needed to recreate the opening groove in the video -> no sticks, but you just open and close the hihat with your foot…which SD3 articulations do I need? I checked out some SD3 midis, but they only use tight edge and closed edge without footwork.

I already told you what you need. But again – you need note 44 which is hihat closed and hihat open which is not mapped to any specific note. You’re going to have to write your own MIDI or modify an existing MIDI string. You’re not looking for a specific sample as such but what note triggers that sample.

Thanks, but I don’t know what you mean. Which articulations are “hihat closed” and “hihat open”? Please forget what I said about Guitar Pro…I write the hihat patterns in SD3…but which samples should I use for the footwork part? Or is the part I need “pedal open, pedal closed, pedal open, pedal closed”?

    PS What is “sequenced hits”?

I never look at that window as it doesn’t tell you what notes you have to hit to use a particular articulation. And that’s what you need to know. I always look at the MIDI in/edrums window. On the left side of that window are listed all the notes and which note corresponds to which articulation. There you will see that MIDI note 44 is assigned to hihat closed and that hihat open while loaded is not assigned to any note and you have to make that assignment yourself. You’re looking at the wrong window.

Sequenced hits are just that – a sequence of hits/notes that make a MIDI sequence that plays the drums in this case. Basic knowledge.

Yeah I know. I’ve not had chance to get into my studio over the last few days but when I do I’ll record a splash and see what notes, articulations and cc values are involved. If it can be played it can be programmed.

I don’t want to sound rude, but I would be thankful for instructions I can understand. You keep telling me what I should NOT do (“don’t look at xy, don’t do this and that)…my question should be easy to answer… -> what should I do in the grid editor to create the part included in the video -> the drummer uses his hands to play the ride and snare etc. while his foot plays the hihat which opens and closes.

If there is NO kit piece to select in the grid editor, you could tell me that it cannot be done in the grid editor and its hits, but it has to be done via CC only.

    Hits with the foot are:

    Pedal Open
    Pedal Closed

The other hits are variations of stick hits.

If you had mentioned from the start that you were using the grid editor in SD3 then I wouldn’t have wasted my time writing what I did write because I don’t use the grid editor nor do I do any drum programming in SD3. Elsewise I did tell you what to do and where to look if you were programming in your daw. You changed your story from programming in Guitar Pro to not using it to doing things in your daw to doing things in SD3.

BTW Scott said thing same thing I said but distilled down.

Yes, grid editor of course as it is better than inside the DAW because you see all the kit pieces without having to remember numbers.
Thanks for your time and for trying to help me. 🙂

I use Cubase which has a drum editor where you can name all the pieces so not always the obvious way. Plus I like all my midi in one place, which is my DAW.

I have Cakewalk Sonar. The midi editor is not that good…so I prefer the grid editor.
