When testing velocities and volume (e.g. I want every crash to have the same volume in the mix) some kit pieces played with 124 velocity still have different levels… e.g. several hits of racktom 1 have -4.8, but then there is a hit with the same velocity that is 2db louder. Is this normal?

You need to stop mixing with your eyes. Otherwise, you are creating what is known as the machine gun effect.

Thanked by: drumjack52I’m no longer mixing. I’ll send my files to a pro…but still one and the same velocity should have e.g. subtle hits and not one that is stronger.

I’d put faith in what Jord says. You’re worrying about things that don’t really matter and that’s become evident in some of your threads. Stop worrying about the numbers. 2dB change isn’t something you’ll hear (or anyone else for that matter) when listened to as a whole. Never ever make decisions on sound when a track is solo’d.

2 dB is not a major variance. Not to mention, you are also measuring a peak transient. That would have resulted in differences the way the drum was hit. You have to remember that behind all these drums is a human hitting them. They are going to sound different each time they are hit at the same velocity. That is the very nature of this instrument.
it’s more important that the drums are sitting audibly in the mix. Not visually.
