I just got back into playing, Have a yamaha dtxpress IV special kit and SD3. I have a 2012 MBP with 16G ram and 1TB HDD.
Do I need an audio interface? If so, what is a good one? What kind of cabling do I need to hook everything up?
Any other tips/advice would be much appreciated. I am not recording, just using the VST for live playing through a PA
Thanks in advance!!

While Macs have headphone outputs you definitely need an interface. There’s not too many dogs out there. I’d look at Sweetwater’s website and chat up their support. I’ve dealt with them over the years and they’re good. It’s hard to recommend an interface without knowing what price level you’re looking at. You don’t need to spend big bucks. You’re also going to need speakers for playing when your not connected to the PA. Yamaha makes some decent small monitors and I’d look for something with at least a 5 inch woofer. As to connection to your computer you have a choice of USB, Firewire 800 and Thunderbolt. What connection you use depends on the interface and they’re all good.
Another thing to be aware of does the interface you want to use have drivers for the specific MacOS you’re running.

There are plenty of decent USB class compliant interfaces that you can just plug in and go. I have a Lewitt Connect as well as a VOLT that I can take with me when I’m not hooked up in the studio. They sound great and are bus powered.
The challenge however might be latency from you computer due to its age and using older USB ports.
